Mages dont use the OFC, the OFC is melee only.

Is something weird.

Wiki says it uses 200 energy if I'm not misreading, which is something I'm usually fairly depleted on (Spirit Stance and all that). Figured mages would be able to actually use it more given they don't have to worry about that aspect. From everything I've read, everything is geared more towards mages than Melee so it seemed a safe assumption.

The OFC uses overcharge, something mages usually have absolutly nothing at all. The damage of the OFC is based on the attack base damage. Something mages usually dont have much. Also why would a mage care about a single use skill with quite some cooldown to attack the monster of a round, when it would be much easier and faster to instead just use their magic attacks? OFC using as mage does makes no sense and this does include 1h mages. When you use the OFC you are either a melee or you dont use it at all.

1H mage makes heavy use of OFC, actually. You gain OC from counter-attacks. If you want, you could add it to your spell rotation and blast it as soon as possible, or use it at the start of a round in spirit stance for better damage.

My friend, I have been told and read nothing but mage this and magic that, I made the assumption that mid-to-high level stuff is all geared towards mages. Considering you need to either grind for aeons to collect the figurines, or amass roughly 315,000 to buy the needed items, it seemed a safe assumption.
I don't play mage, even if the opinions I seem to find suggest I'm deliberately kneecapping myself by not doing so, so I genuinely don't know how they function. I figured bonking things with your staff would give you the overcharge needed to use it, and given I blow through overcharge like Counter-Strike players blow through Cheetos, in my mind I figured it might be primarily intended for mages instead.

Oh yeah, i can see how that can be usefull when you need quite some damage and DD for the OFC to be actually a round killer. Just gives me another reason to never even try 1H mage in the first place, when a weak as shit OFC is actually usefull.

It's not recommended, enter ss first then your OFC damage will be doubled

Nah, mages don't tend to actually hit enemies with their staff - just spam spells constantly. Low-level or poorly geared mages might do sometimes, to take advantage of an effect that can restore mana.

For what it's worth, 315k is an extremely teeny weeny tiny amount of credits in the long term scale of HV (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

And you're not really causing yourself problems by not switching to mage - when optimised, it performs extremely well, but it's a glass cannon build dependent on the cannon part. Players who don't have the resources (or knowledge) to get started just get the glass part. I don't really recommend people rush into swapping to mage until they've levelled as melee to at least 350, if not 400... I didn't swap til 450 myself, but it's a little cheaper these days than it was back then.

And of course, the less you play, the less important it is to switch to mage. If you only play a couple daily arenas or less, melee will serve you fine.

One day, I shall have an Ethereal Mace and a full set of half-decent Plate Armour, and return to Morgoth.

Okay, finally can use it. OFC is going to make my life so much easier going off what it does.
Suppose given the Crystal situation I'm going to have to focus on something else other than getting all my monsters up to 750 or 500 until HVMarket gets replenished and stabilises on that front.
Pulled three legendaries out of the Bazaar (yes, yes, I know, I know, not supposed to trade with the Bazaar) so I'll have something to swap out my current gear for, currently Item World-ing an Ethereal Waki to max it out so I can replace my current one. Beyond that, though, I'm thinking it's probably smart to turn my credits into Hath and save up for the Crystal perks so I can get back to upgrading my monsters again.

Looks like HVMarket has adequate crystal stores to me, and the prices are all normal-ish (although it tends to work out better to buy them as packs unless you have a significant imbalance).
