I have no idea myself, but I suppose it could be related to the fact that our police+military forces are so persecuted every time that they use their weapons (even for self-defense), that people treat them just like if they had no weapon to begin with. I mean, if they ever dare to use it, they end up being sentenced...
I don't wanna get too political, but since I see it as a common trope against France and my education lacked a more extense world history, where does that trope comes from?
It's a way of calling the French cheese eating surrender monkeys. basically, the French went to war with someone. I stead of shooting at them, they drop their rifles and runs away. hence, never fired, dropped once.
It's in the same vein as "What are the gears in a French tank? One forward, five reverse"
Edit: no serious offense intended towards those of French heritage.

yeah, but a battle in specific? a year? The thing that surprises me the most is how WW2 ended long ago and whatever happened to France it's still remembered.
I don't think any of you will be offending anyone around here, except maybe a 90y/o grunt who still lives in the past. Would still be better to stop though, because you might end up saying something that would really offend someone (not me, I despise my own country as a whole).
Well I would like to add that France has an excellent tradition of adult comics, seconded only to Japan. That must count for something, don't you think?

I don't care about italian/non italian way to cook it. I wouldn't eat any made from anyone else besides me or my mom anyway (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/duck.gif)
didn't catch that, but I wanted to know historical facts, anyway, it seems I shouldn't ask in case someone gets offended, I'll add it to the list of questions I shouldn't ask, between "where does the n-word originate?" and "are you pregnant or just fat"
yep, seen it a few times on american media and wondered why, I must suppose it's something from ww2, but I wondered why it's still a common trope, as I said before, my world history knowledge is quite small
