They're very easy for me to set up, and save the bidder time, sleep, and money (often), as long as you have an idea of your true max bid.

Best case, you win the item without micromanaging re-bidding multiple times and save a hefty percentage of your maximum bid.
Worst case, someone else gets the item instead and you pay nothing.
