Depends what they were banned for. Pulling an item? I'm not going to do that, so the system gets a stable seller. Nonpayment? I'm not going to do that either, so the system gets a stable buyer. Shill bidding? That's more problematic, since you could still do that while employing a proxy seller, without the proxy seller needing to be involved.

If someone is going to be permabanned from one of the most important parts of the economy, and you want other people not to help them, then you need a very public ban list & record of the reasons why. Burden of proof is on the accuser, and if you want a permanent sanction, you need a permanent record of the proof.

I'd planned to do things transparently so people could voice any legitimate objections.

Really, it's more of a problem than it used to be because there used to be 2+ competing auctioneers. Superlatanium says he doesn't aim to be a profit maximizer, so when he built a largely automated system, he starting running it for free for the benefit of the community. And this incidentally ends up permanently disfranchising people who get banned once, because there's no longer turnover of auctioneers as they get burnt out, and competing auctions to go to.

So, maybe it's time to solve that by time-limiting bans except for the most severe offenses?

If you were around at the time, you may have heard what happened. We have been transparent, but it is not useful to keep repeating the issues. It had nothing to do with this particular auction, though. None of the examples you mentioned were the reason. But we may have to look into that particular ban and discuss if it is still proportional. It may well be, as some feel that this user should not have access to his account for 1000 years - although it is important to stress that only one person decides on account bans, and that is not the HV Mod team. Our opinions do not matter at all in such cases. So yeah, let's see - I must admit it has been a while ago already.
