Girls, I hate to be anal about dashes and hyphens in monster names, but I read this here on the wiki...
QUOTE
No typographically similar numerical substitutions on names of existing monsters (that is, o=0 and i=1=l, space=hyphen)
No consecutive spaces or hyphens
Spaces and hyphens cannot be next to each other
Cannot start or end with hyphens
Maximum 5 spaces or hyphens per name
There is the hyphen (-), en dash (–), and em dash (—).
Hyphen -
QUOTE
They are used in names, such as "Julia Louis-Dreyfus" and "Sainte-Ode", and in compound modifiers, as in "hard-boiled egg". Hyphens are also used for prefixes and suffixes, such as "mid-Atlantic" and "shell-like".
Yes, it's correct that there should not be any spaces around a hyphen.
En dash –
QUOTE
slightly longer than hyphens and are used in date ranges, such as 1849–63, and to join two names in a phrase, such as the Michelson–Morley experiment.
Spaced en dashes are also used to set aside a phrase – like so – in a sentence
This is what I'm going to ask about concerning monster names.
Em dash —
QUOTE
are even longer and are used solely to set aside a phrase—like this—in a sentence.
Sexy, I love them. They can take the place of parenthesis.
Anyway, my concern is with the en dash, which is larger than a hyphen. Can we be allowed to have spaces on either side of it in monster names in the case where it separates a name from a phrase? Sample: Batman – Guardian of Gotham.
