What's an Onan? I tried to look it up on the internet and most of what comes back is Cummins Onan RV generators.

I warmly recommend a method I often use myself: when I run into a term or name I’ve never heard before, I first check Wikipedia or Wiktionary, and only then fall back to search engine sites such as Duckduckgo.

The reason beyond the exact form オナニー (onanī, with a long ī at the end) is that the word was borrowed from German (Onanie, the pronunciation of which is almost exactly the same).

I’ve read somewhere that around 1920s or so, German works discussing sexuality were fairly popular in Japan, but I’m not able to locate sources right now. If that is correct, that (as well as the fact that Germany was generally considered a great power of science and research during and after the Meiji era) would explain the German origin.

And Onanie Master Kurosawa is a damn good story, even if the art does not look quite professional.

Hmm this Onanie Master Kurosawa art looks okay to me. A lot of manga art does not look quite professional, so it's fine. Even a lot of famous series, if you look at the old comics the artist makes, quite a few of them look like crap.

Examples, well there are countless, but let's say Oh My Goddess! and One Punch Man (I assume this one still looks like crap, the original version). Negima (go before Love Hina) and whatever, quite a lot. Maybe a majority even.

Actually, I like many aspects of the art in that series. My main problem is that it looks like there’s no inking, which also highlights some of the character designs I like less. But Kurosawa and Kitahara’s designs are great for the story, and all in all, I vastly prefer the current version to the alternative that the comic would have been left unfinished due to lack of time and resources.
