I like the thick and thin variation, like it was drawn with caligrapher's pen. But not too dramatic.
Also, something akin to brush end looks amazing. See the horizontal line for あ on bold variant.

ZeroGene, it's uniform in shape from lower/uppercase with the exception of it becoming noticeably bolder, so that might work for you.

I did a pretty extensive search in 1001fonts and dafont.
Is there any other site I should search in from now on?

It was SF Toontime. Whatfontis.com is pretty cool.
