Here's an interesting thing I noticed: monsters immune to a given type of attack can still suffer the magical secondary effect.

I cast fireball of fire-immune crit by accident, yet it got affected by searing skin. Presumably, it would not be taking damage, but its cold resistance might have been lowered even further... this could use some future testing

1 4 Fireball procs the effect Searing Skin on Fire Fox.
1 3 Fireball hits Fire Fox for 1 fire damage.
1 2 You cast Fireball.

I tried this out just for you. The effect shows up, but it doesn't do damage.
This may be a special case, though, since it's trying to cause damage to a fire-immune monster; non-damage aspects of the elemental status effects might still apply.

16 2 Effect Searing Skin on Fire Fox has expired.
16 1 You hit Fire Fox for 75 physical damage.
15 2 Fire Fox hits you for 7 damage.
15 1 Fire Fox dodges your attack.
14 2 You dodge the attack from Fire Fox.
14 1 You hit Fire Fox for 68 physical damage.
13 4 Fire Fox hits you for 13 damage.
13 3 Icestrike procs the effect Freezing Limbs on Fire Fox.
13 2 Icestrike blasts Fire Fox for 346 cold damage.
13 1 You cast Icestrike.
12 4 You dodge the attack from Fire Fox.
12 3 Fireball procs the effect Searing Skin on Fire Fox.

Wiki bestiary lists Scary Ghosts as being weak to fire, but my experience of fireballing them suggests they are not; my fire spells score much better against other fire weakness monsters, Scary Ghosts seem to take about as much damage as monsters which are not weak (or immune) to fire. What do you think?

Well, the table doesn't say they're especially weak against Fire, just that it's the most effective. I've found it to be a lot more effective than either Elec or Wind, and on average a little better than Cold. As for Holy and Dark, I'm not in a position to say.

Fire is effective, but the real weakness, of course, is Holy.

comparing ~36% rating, 80ish prof fire crit to 30%rating, ~4ish prof normal holy hit?

seems like a no brainer to me

no complaining later when the legendaries start falling by the wayside to my high prof holy attacks. i'll be saying, "told ya so."

There only like... 3, I think. I guess you have to start somewhere if you ever want it to be effective against legendaries. That's why I choose to use it instead of flare when those enemies show up in hourly battles or the early arena challenges.

With Scary Ghost, I found fire to be the most effective, even with smite. A fireball on avg tends to take 75% off the ghost while smite will sometimes instant kill it while other times leaving it with 50% health. Of course, my elemental proficiency is like 60 something and my divine is only 0.75. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

It was mentioned that some monsters specialize in magical attacks, others in physical combat. Perhaps this could be noted in a new column at the Wiki Bestiary?

I'd disagree, since before I read it here, I didn't realize it (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) But on a second look it seems to me this is already in the bestiary - I guess all non-magical attacks are classed as physical.

what did we learn from this?
it isn't immune to fire (even tho the wiki says it is)
it isn't immune to lightning
it seems weak to either divine or lightning (maybe both)
the bunneh gave the elixir i used to kill it, back to me
i'm clueless why my poisons damage suddenly jumped 12 damage
and i wish i would've spammed smite (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) would've been so much faster

I bet you wish you hadn't blown off the Holy proficiency until now. :3

Especially if you were to scale the damage with respect to your other elemental attacks.
