You could always install another DE like XFCE, KDE or Cinnamon.

Or if you want to try something "new" Mint is a less retarded Ubuntu.

I showed someone Debian as an intro to Linux.
IDK if it's working, but it might be.

Edit: they say it is. I guess I read them well in terms of their patience and willingness to learn.
Long term goal: Get them running FVWM. And remap caps lock to control.

As heavy gamer, Windows 10. I will move onto 11 when it becomes stable enough.

I hate apt too much to recommend it to anyone. Lately i've been recommending opensuse if anyone asks me, has a GUI installer and lots of GUI system management via YaST, more akin to Windows. Also offers a well integrated and stable kde experience (again closer to Windows).

you could always use a windows KVM for gaming, i completely got rid of wine and 32 bit libraries in favor of a KVM whenever i need windows for some reason (rarely happens). With my setup i basically achieved 1:1 performance to bare metal.

I don't mind apt. Maybe it's because I'm full of copium.

But I build my own packages from sources rather frequently, and it's usually not too painful to do 'apt-get source <package>', edit a control file and then do 'dpkg-buildpackage -uc -us -b'.

Worth noting that I do also have pacman built on my debian system for the rare occasion I want to build an AUR repository without as much annoyance. There's a GTK3 fork that I like (gtk3-typeaheadfind).

Wine is a free implementation of the Windows API. I'd rather support it.

if you build by source a lot why not gentoo? Portage is amazing.

Really the only thing i do on Windows nowadays is kernel mode driver development, something that can't be done via wine anyway.
I also appreciate the control, security and performance a VM provides over wine, and that things will run as expected.

I can think of many times when that is not the case and wine works better than any modern windows version.

Mostly because I like the option to be lazy and use binaries sometimes. Also every single computer I use is at least ten years old, so building modern software on them ranges from being painful to being excruciating.

I do regularly consider trying Gentoo, and always end up putting it off for the future.
I like OpenBSD, too.

The really big ones like gcc and firefox have binaries, but it can still take a while to compile your system on older cpus. I might switch back to gentoo when i have some time now that im on a modern cpu on my desktop.

This is exactly why it's a "maybe someday" thing for me.

The oldest laptop I have is a 3720QM, which is coming up on ten years. I had a pentium 4 for running WinXp but the mobo died. The i7 920 died before that.

I found more need for a dedicated win98 and Win XP pc vs having a Vista/Win7/Win8 pc.

I don't do much compiling anymore, last issue I had was on a skylake era Xeon. Can't remember what the problem was though.
