I'm using GalliumOS, a weird linux system for chromebooks based on ubuntu, so far, it's managed to increase the battery life alot, and made it so I can run everything I genuinely want to, even going to far as to have really good streaming for my steam games.

Main issue was figuring out how to install it on my specific chromebook because there's so many varients and install instructions, I spent a few hours going through instructions again and again. (Still worth it, cause now it's a good laptop and not a web browser that harvests my data.)

what was the deal with chromebooks and linux again, did you need to throw on coreboot(bios replacement) to get it to put up with the linux install or is that only on some models/types?
I recall people doing that before and they made it seem like that was a needed workaround to get anything none chromeos(whatever it was called) on there. but nowadays I hear so many people talking about putting linux on their chromebooks it seems like the bar for doing that has gone down.

if it does just work these days for all models it'd be a decent option if I ever need some non important machine for traveling, they pop up dirt cheap all the time

Currently running manjaro as I got sick of arch breaking NVIDIA every Pacman -Syu. Dual booting with win10, but once I get single GPU passthrough working win10 will be virtualised.
The sacrifices I made for mini itx...

I tried to look it up for you but couldn't find anything useful or especially relevant. Apparently some need coreboot, but others don't? There's also an "official" supported way to run "linux" but it's just sandboxed crap under the normal kernel, sort of like Android userland debian pseudo-chroots and such.

Yeah, I basically can't even justify getting a chromebook when there are used, higher-end laptops out there that with better performance and less restrictions/bullshit. I'd pay an extra $20-30 for a used non-chromebook than for a used chromebook (with a few exceptions for specific garbage makes/models).

The one nice thing about some chromebooks is that some have nice, more-square aspect ratios. IDK if they're matte, though.

Old corporate laptops hold value better though, unfortunately. Even a 2007 Dell Latitude on ebay is kind of silly ($40-50) and they can't use as much RAM (max is 4GB DDR2, I believe).

If you go for random consumer laptops, though, you can even get dedicated GPU laptops from after the initial RoHS malaise era (around 2006/2007 to 2010) for a good price, and they might still be marginally more repairable/serviceable/upgradeable/expandable than a chromebook.

You'll get no argument from me, I go for old corporate laptops as well and advise the same for anyone I care about that asks. But clearly people like chromebooks for one reason or another ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Using Windows 10 on a laptop, and windows 7 on a pc.

This is just a reminder that a laptop is a personal computer.

Side thought: I had a korean friend tell me that he'd call some things that I'd recognize as game consoles as "PC's." I forget if it was in the context of online games (MMO's and such), but I remember that he said he'd classify some dreamcast games as "PC" games. I thought that was weird. Of course, he also uses metal chopsticks. So there's more than one interesting/unusual cultural quirk I've encountered. I mean, imagine trying to eat a butterfish with Metal chopsticks.

Yeah, until about 2012 all of my laptops were ex-corporate laptops. There is some good value there if you don't specifically want a high end graphics chip but occasionally there are decent ones with slightly older graphics for good prices.

I stopped playing mtga half a year ago, it turned to garbage.
Account had 5 or 6 mastery passes and 150k gold & 5k gems and dozens of mythic wildcards + draft tokens and hundreds of other wildcards and unopened packs.

Having to play a card game where Ullamog and Ugin exist and goodstuff jank like Wilderness Reclamation & Fires of Invention is banned completely ruined the game.
The powercreep is amazingly incompetent, they've banned more cards in a year than ever before, almost like activists of the coast hired a bunch of idiots to write cards and commies to make gay/trans/black card art and promo material.

It's a dead game, everyone should stop collecting after Throne of Eldraine or possibly Theros Beyond Death when they introduced the mutate/companions mechanics with Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths and the stupid godzilla association.
After that expansion i just quit, they were planning a DnD set and now it's a Harry Potter one...lol, literally out of ideas like Hollywood.

I forgot to mention, they actively rig the game by fixing the matches and interfering in your card draws.
This is supposedly meant to encourage a 50% winrate for all players but it absolutely ruins retention rates from veteran and master players who see the bullshit and drop the game like me.

Roommate spent at least $900 on MtG cards over the course of two years.

I just have my Pokémon cards from years ago and no intention of picking up another TCG (or doing anything with the Pokémon one anymore).

I have a few nice cards but really they're just sentimental for me.

I used to have some nice Yu-Gi-Oh cards as well, but I think my parents threw them out. Except I recently found a skeleton mage card wedged in a tub full of VHS tapes, so at least that one card survived.

I miss my "Change of Heart" card; I remember loving the art on it. It was holo, too.

I also had a three headed blue eyes card, but I don't have as much attachment to it.

I’m using Apple stuff with Accessibility features tuned on in Japanese.

I’ve got a “Kanji disability” so I have the OS read them back to me. The “Otoya” voice is really good.
