At the moment, Windows XP.
Normally, Debian Sid.
QUOTE(Anime Janai @ Nov 30 2020, 03:59) *
The bloat has been overcome by the ever growing CPU processing power and terabyte hard drives.
Yet Moore's law pretty much ended this last decade (the periods of time for performance gains increased outside of their original specified trend), and if you have less stuff running on the CPU you can necessarily perform individual tasks faster. If your OS takes less space, you can necessarily store more than if it takes more space. You're speaking of partial mitigations rather than actual fixes.
QUOTE(Anime Janai @ Nov 30 2020, 03:59) *
Because CPU power and storage has become "infinite" to the vast majority, they don't care about bloat. Practical people simply ignore bloat and ballotbox stuffing and go on with their lives.
Ignoring the redpill in there, I think it's actually because MS can drop support for a product and in doing so force everyone to accept the additional bloat because it's less painful than switching to an entirely different operating system paradigm.

Contrary to what you might believe, old hardware does not simply disappear. This laptop has a 40GB HDD.

Fedora (Spin) 33 with MATE desktop - worked better (in my experience, at least) with AMD APUs than my old standby Debian Stable. My first experience with rolling distros since Xubuntu 7.10(!)

"Dual boot" (separate HDDs) with Windows 10 which came with the new rig.

Reinstalled my Windows 10 recently on the editing laptop...

Same programs list as before, nuked the temporary storage settings, always run the browser in incognito unless necessary.

And now I had 25GBs extra storage space free... Hmmm, wonder where it does come from?

Not mentioning startup speed is somewhat improved now

On the Windows 10 machine, the Windows Update likes to disable itself. Contacting microsoft tech support always results in the "Download the latest win10 and Reinstall Windows 10" solution. A full download, reinstall, loss of presets and apps....blah.

Hardly; you have none of the hardware access you get with a proper linux kernel.
For instance, i can raw-write to the backlight register of my GPU to turn off my laptop's backlight while leaving the machine running and logged in with the lid open. I have that bound to trigger on an ACPI event which triggers whenever I hit my laptop's "ThinkVantage" button (it's an old thinkpad) or fn+space (the 'magnifier' ACPI event on my machine).
And I can use my video capture USB stick under Linux; the last version with drivers officially supplied/supported by the seller (Roxio) drivers was Windows Vista. The Vista drivers worked in 7, but BSOD'd on 8, and the Windows 8 drivers I found after looking for about eight hours were actually meant for a different company's device that happened to use the same chipset. There are no Windows 10 drivers for it (or at least, I've come to that conclusion after looking for about 8 hours). I've not tried the Windows 8 drivers on 10 to see if they'll work, though, on account of not using Windows 10 for anything, ever, for any reason.

Also my sound card's last windows drivers were for 7; the card is still perfectly adequate today though and works under Linux.
