It's the same basic kernel design underlying both products. And servers are not inherently more secure. It depends largely upon configuration and what software they are exposing to the network.

If you don't mind your rights, or being used as a live test subject, sure.
If your bad experience amounts to "It's not windows; where's the C: drive and gpedit.msc" then you need to try again.
If it's "no games," then god help you. I just emulate since there are lots of nice emulators and lots of nice console/old computer games I've not played.
