Is all that junk on the task bar really necessary?
Yup, as I cba to remember where in the menu system those things are, or what shortcuts to give to them, and I don't like icons obscuring my background (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Get [rocketdock.com] Rocketdock or something similar like objectdock
i used one when i had a ungodly amount of clutter on my desktop, was able to completely clear everything off my taskbar and desktop (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Why should I? (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) What I have on my desktop is in perfect order, and I don't need any solutions as there are no problems with it.
Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala for me with a small install of Windows XP for any games/programs that I just can't get to work under Wine. This setup has worked well for two years now, probably toss Windows 7 on my next desktop PC though.
I think it looks fine. Heck you can always expand your taskbar to make it 2 lines tall and store twice the number of icons if your running out of room. Whatever works for you. My XP desktop is similar but instead of on the taskbar, I have couple dozen icons on my desktop.
I had an empty partition so I just tried a dual boot with karmic xubuntu. After running for a while, it locked up and I had to do a hard shutdown. Now it gives me a kernel panic when I try to start it. It seems to be more unstable because jaunty never locked up, and never gave me a kernel panic. It's been through hard shutdowns before, and never corrupted it's / partition. Stupid karmic... Also I think karmic is ugly...
