Arch Linux on the laptop, because it's simple and highly amenable to tinkering. Great package manager and an amazing selection of Haskell packages (which is kind of important to me as a functional programming nut.) Also gives you the best battery life bar none with the right configuration, and pretty amazing boot times too (15 seconds from power on to login screen; got it down to 11 before with some black magic that turned out to cause more problems than I cared to solve.)

Only real problem I've run into is that Arch doesn't package Java 5 anymore, which is necessary if you want to develop Java apps for cell phones. Luckily, creating your own packages is trivial with Arch, so it wasn't that much of a problem.

On the desktop, Debian and Windows XP. Don't dare to upgrade the Debian install to Arch (I'm tired of the Debian megafreeze model and sorry state of Haskell packaging) because it's got a pretty convoluted setup of layers upon layers of ugly hacks and crazy configs, which I doubt I'd be able to easily recreate. XP I won't upgrade, since it's the pinnacle of Microsoft technology (which doesn't really say much) and it still runs Oblivion. As long as that install still draws breath, it stays the way it is.

On the server, Debian, because it's easy to manage and has a pretty solid track record (apart from that OpenSSL incident, which almost made me join the [article.gmane.org] "maturbating monkeys" running OpenBSD.)

As an OpenBSD user since the 2.0 days, I still only use it for firewalls and specialized secure servers. Too much of a pain in the ass to be a desktop. Same goes for the other BSDs too. Even Fedora pales in the "prettiness" (for lack of a better word and laziness to think of one) of Ubuntu.

Rigth now I am using Ubuntu 9.04 and I haven't had many problem so far, ALSA doesn't start properly when booting so I have to restart it from the command line when I logon or reboot until it starts properly and I also had to remove some stuff and add some programs:

Transmission > rTorrent
Rhythmbox > mp3blaster
Totem > MPlayer
gedit > Geany[like Notepad++]
Firefox > Opera
Default password keeper[don't remember the name] > KeePassX
OpenOffice > AbiWord

+ Comix
+ p7zip
+ Inkscape
+ KTouch[I want to learn touch typing]
+ xCHM
+ K9copy[like DVDShrink]

- Java
- Mono[.NET Framework equivalent for linux]

Vista Ultimate x64 and after I bought 4GB of new RAM to replace my faulty ones I have almost nothing to complain about.
Every game runs fine, only firefox crashes once a week, but that's what session restore is for.
I don't know what's all the vista hate about. After the SP2 it's really spiffy.

XP SP2. I hate Vista with a passion. If I ever have to buy a computer with Vista, it's getting downgraded. Unless it's a laptop, I'm probably safe though. I tend to build my own computers.

Just curious, are you a casual or avid computer user? As in, do you generally use your computer for more than things like internet, e-mail, video, music, etc.?

I'm a no-life nerd who spends all his time in front of the computer, so I'd say I'm not a casual user. I mostly do Internet, video, music and gaming though.
I used to have WinXP and hated it oh so much after switching from WinME, but after I discovered the "old theme" I was fine with the new system. Same for Vista, I hated how it looked, but after a week I got used to it and the sidebar is nice to have as I have two displays. The overall visuals are not as nice as Compiz, but I do like it that ctrl+alt+del now switches you to a logon-like screen and allows you to pick what you want to do which is very useful for games that randomly fuck up and you're left with a black screen. On XP I had to fiddle around in the dark, judging by where the mouse is and trying to close the app, now it ends up minimized and I can close it effortlessly. The black taskbar is a bother, but not many apps use black icons nowadays.
I haven't really seen any difference between DX10 and DX9 in games, but because of crappy game protection that limits users to a couple activations, I'm sticking to Vista for now. I'll probably download Win7 when I buy a new PC in a year or more and when basic stuff like daemon tools will be available.
