I love my Win XP. It's too bad I'll have to wait to buy a new computer to try out Win7 since I don't have enough room for it.

Also, used a few versions of Linux for a while and it sucks. Mostly because it was very different and even if it did look like Windows, it didn't have options where I expected them to be. [Why is it that these Linux users prefer shortening meaningful names to DOS names? Like VLC Media Player is shortened to vlcm in a menu? I don't like to use cheat sheets to open up programs. ~_~] One thing I didn't like was the way the programs install, you either have to get one of several different downloading programs that downloads premade software or worse, if it's not a part of the list, you have to use the terminal and gcc+ (spelling?) to compile the source code.

Also choosing 1 OS from 300 premade ones world wide, even the top 10, is a pain.

Never tried MAC before and not interested, not too many games support it.

Because you can't buy a new hard drive without buying a whole new computer...

It isn't Windows, so why did you expect it to be that? If you want Windows, use Windows, FFS.

I don't know what distro you tried, but it shows up as "VLC media player" in the Applications menu in Ubuntu.

"Premade software"? So a setup.exe is less "premade"? Also, the "downloading program" is called a package manager, and it significantly simplifies the process of installing - it downloads everything necessary and installs it automatically, it can't get much simpler than that. It's one of those things that make me not want to go back to Windows. Almost all the software you may need is already available as packages, and if they're not, "./configure", "make", "make install" isn't exactly rocket surgery.

That's the beauty of Linux. With so many different distros available, there's one for every need. There are a few online quizes where you can find out what suits you best.

I figured it would be a better investment buying a new computer with a I7 core proc and a 1TB HDD instead of incremental upgrades for this old machine.

No, but I didn't expect it to be totally different from what I expected and there are already other Linux variants that try to mimic windows. I figured that some of the popular ones would act more like it than others.

It's been several years since I've tried Linux and it wasn't Ubuntu.

Yeah, the package managers was what I was thinking, but from what I was reading, there were several package managers for one OS.

I've looked through various help desks, forums, and even a book on Linux to learn the basic act of installing source code. I couldn't find a damn thing until a book told me in several chapters how to do it, that's when I said fuck it to linux.

Yeah, but why would I navigate through so many variants if I need just 1 general purpose OS?

I'm not interested in Linux anymore, it was interesting when it seemed like a whole new world of opportunity to try something that was better than Windows, but it just wasn't what I was looking for. The one I tried wasn't easy to configure and was a little buggy. The one thing I missed the most was the assortment of games Windows had, even the MACs have there own collection of retail games, Linux didn't have much at all.

BTW, I hate people like you that try to pick apart every little opinion and try to make yourself seem so much smarter when you're just full of yourself most of the time. Yeah, I know some of my statements were incorrect and I realize that, but do you like to stroke your ego this much?

Incremental upgrades had worked for most of my life with computers, which is around 12 years now.

I'm currently using XP SP3.

i use XP SP3, after having used 95, 98, xp, vista, linux, OS 9.1 and OS 10.1. not to mention vector linux, ubuntu, and suse 8 through 10.

yes, macs are more reliable, linux is less reliable and more customizable, but XP works with most applications, and pretty much all devices. i've had to pay to customise xp, whereas it would be free on linux, but that is what you pay for a more reliable operating system.

the main reason i don't use a mac all of the time is the cost-functionality ratio. yes, macs are better in terms of reliability, as i've already said, but they cost WAY too much to be cost effective.
the laptop/desktop equivalent in windows is less than half the price of the mac, and because the OS depends on the machine you buy, 9/10 times, i cannot afford OSX

1 TB drives are so overrated. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Don't get me wrong, they are great for storage, but as a primary drive... yuck, especially if data gets thrown around it... oh the terrible seek times... And then compound that with the fact that most people rarely defragment their drives... (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/mellow.gif)

I could say something now, but you'll just bash me, no matter what I post in the Tech Chat, so I'll just ban myself from here.

Nooo, don't ban yourself from here. This is one of the few places I consider your comments worth the time I spent reading them.
That didn't come out as complimentary as intended I think.

P.S.
KSHed FTW.

My God yes. The seek times are horrible. I have two folders that lock my computer for about 30 seconds when I highlight them.

Anyway, I'm using XP SP3

Not for web browsining, that would be a terrible idea.

My iPhone makes a decent little Hentaiverse client. Once zoomed in enough to see that is. =)

I just have the iTouch 1G, no Bluetooth (which is useless) or Satlink (which makes the iTouch useless), so... unless I'm neat a hot spot, I'm better off just using it for musics :<

On the upside, by the time you're sick of it (even for music), whatever is out by then will be way better than now. Of course, those Apple tablets w/ Verizon rumors are getting interesting again.
