One of the main reasons they are gone in the first place is that the indexing was choking on tens of thousands of samey posts.

While you are correct, there were also so many good posts in there. Even if it was much less than 1% of posts, that was still a lot of posts. If you can't bring them back in the forum, can't you send them to be hold in some separate forum or archive for a while?
