get an medium Intuos 5 pro. make sure it says "PRO" they have more user friendly buttons. this tabby is good size to carry around in a regular backpack. also, I would highly recommend to buy a sleeve for it so it doesn't get damaged or scratched.
optional, but just to be on the safe side, try to get the wireless adaptor in case the usb socket gets damaged.
other than that I would not go for any higher end models unless you can actually justify the purchase. people may complain about the learning curve to master a basic tablet, but personally I would not bother with a cintiq or a companion.
why is that? you may ask... thats because a tool is a tool, it won't make magic happen for you. only hard earned experience through diligent practice gives you best results. unless you own a studio and have a technical reason to justify a purchase for a cintiq or companion then go ahead, other than that then don't waste your money.
I've seen on many occasions many people working in the industry still using their Intuos 3 and they can still create beautiful work.
good luck.
