The main reason I don't like the idea of audio, is because it will be very uncommon for a loopable video section to have equally loopable audio. The audio would either have sharp entry and drop-offs, or else you'd have to make the video start and stop at strange visual places in order to accommodate the audio,

People will compose their own audio loops. Dust off the synthesizer program and make some loopable BGM, add speech samples and sound effects.

They'll compose audio loops to go with video loops. It doesn't have to be the original audio. Rewrite the dialog using a speech synthesizer.

Just because a board allows audio doesn't mean every clip is required to have it; people making video loops can always drop the audio track themselves.

Looking forward to having video and audio everywhere without having to allow Flash or go through fucking Youtube.

webm would be nice but I don't think we need sounds for them.

Allowing audio is a bad idea simply because there will inevitably be imbeciles uploading whole anime episodes as galleries by splitting them in 600 webm's to fit within the size limit

Well I don't think we've had many cases of people misusing GIFs so I think we're good on that front. Hopefully.

If you allow webm in the galleries at all, you'll get people splitting and uploading entire movies, and you'll need policies to deal with it, like only allowing footage with sexual content, and only up to x seconds of "gap" footage before, between or after sex acts. Noncomplying galleries get expunged as usual and the uploader gets warned or banned. It would work just as well with audio. Number of minutes of video a user can upload per week could be a function of mod power, at least initially.

As for screamers, they can be tagged and expunged. Sound can be muted by default in galleries newer than a certain number of days; then people with weak nerves have no grounds to complain if they click to enable sound on a clip and go blundering through with their headphones on high. If people are really so worried about it, sound can stay muted by default on a gallery until enough upvotes have been put into a "screened" tag.

If sound can make shock clips significantly more effective, then it probably can make desirable content significantly more desirable as well.

A chan with a 1-3 day retention time for most posts and indifferent moderation is going to have different problems than a well-curated archive.

So... will webms in the galleries ever happen? If so, what should be done with gif galleries in the future? If someone uploads a webm version, would the gif version be removed, or kept?

Well, this is assuming webms ever happen after all.

Webm support would be pretty neat.

Rickroll should still be effective. Doubt anyone needs the sound for that one.
