Money win.
Whether you just consider having lots of credits for equipments/items/forge/others, or add hath perks and things requiring "external" money, those who have Money win against players and monsters, regardless of melee or mages.

my Recommend:
0-200 Eth Mace + Plate of Protection.
201-310 Rapier + Force Shield + Power of Protection.
311- Mage.

yep. by level 400 you have so much passive defense that you really don't need to worry about getting one-shotted so much on PFUDOR and you have enough credits lying around to spend on the crazy expensive mage gear you see in auctions since you probably completed your melee set + forged it + got most of the hath perks you wanted before hitting level 375

So much for my plan of trying to do this Skyrim style and start off as a caster...

Cost wise I think melee is much better. Cheaper equips less need for consumables and dat block chance means overall longer survivabilty for much less dosh.

Melee is good but I do mage.

At low level, you d better be a melee cuz u don't have enough base to be a mage like a stat, equipments, spell, and so on.
But at enough level (around 200), do whatever u wanna be.

What's your build?

I started as rainbow mage. then went dark. then went holy to clear SGs super fast. Now have dark/holy/wind sets.

now using charged dark to gfest and arena. Holy for SGs. Wind set incomplete.

after having near endgame sets for all mage styles, my advice: In terms of damage/mana spent, elemental > holy/dark. holy=dark. Gfest is much more profitable than SGs (on average), and elemental can supposedly complete PFUDOR gfest. You can always have a mediocre holy/dark set to do SGs. if you feel you need 'better cure' add gloves or shoes of heimdall.

@treesloth... let me asking you, since you have godly holy and dark sets (and assuming you don't need thefting/tap)... what is faster to clear DwD, holy or dark?

Definitely Holy. Holy has the 10% extra damage from it's debuff proc, so it is 10% faster than dark. Also, if you need mana during SG runs, holy automatically proc's Soul Fire, so you just need to cast drain on a SG. If you use Dark, you have to cast a holy spell, hope it proc's Soul fire on a SG, then drain; it's much more time consuming. Ether Theft >> Ether Tap during SGs. Tapping is generally for gfest'ing.

Dark doesn't have any advantage beyond automatic Ripened Soul (useful for gfest), so Dark is really left out in the cold, without a niche.
