As a new HV player, I gotta say, it's been fun so far. However, I can't seem to decide which play style I like the best. The mage style has some devastating spells but it's kinda fragile and relies heavily on MP so your limited as to how many rounds you can go without consumables. The melee (one-handed) style is decent and can last a lot longer without assistance from consumables. Of course, this is all with just the few pieces of equipment I've gathered up. So in all honesty, both of my "builds" might suck compared to what they could be.
What do you think? I'm curious as to what your opinions on the different builds are for combat style. I looked at the wiki and didn't really get a detailed answer to this question.

I think you should run as fast as you can from HV. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) ...... okok, as a mage, I say go with melee, specifically 1H for the time being. Gear/weapons is much cheaper and still devastating against mobs. This post has been edited by treesloth: Aug 15 2014, 22:38

QUOTE(varst @ Aug 15 2014, 13:25) Yeah, read that (HV advice wiki) and it didn't really go into enough detail for me. I'm used to RPGs and whatnot so learning this is a slight learning curve but I'm getting the hang of it. What I'm looking for is more or less of a side-by-side comparison of the play styles and how they compare at various levels (let's say from beginner to about lvl 200). oh so you want a summary huh? have you ever done hardcore studying? Well, it's time to hit the books. As in read 'Ask the experts' thread starting from the last 6months or so. Then come back here and write up a book report. Or not. Don't forget to take notes. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) There'll be a pop quiz. (I miss teaching undergrads, oh the joy I get out of giving them hell (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) )

well that's easy. to make a long story short: pre-level 310 = fuck mage. that shit is gay. between level 310-400 = melee to grind exp on high difficulty. mage to grind credits/items/etc. on lower difficulty post-level 400 = fuck melee. that shit is gay. basically, start out as melee, and slowly but surely go for mage. this is how it usually works (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/heh.gif) i could go into more depth if you want, but this is pretty much all you need to know This post has been edited by something: Aug 15 2014, 23:25

At least that's what I'm getting out of this. XD

XD That's a fair response, I just haven't seen any threads dedicated to this subject in particular and the "ask the experts" thread seemed more of a "specific to your situation" thread to be of any help to me.

yep. by level 400 you have so much passive defense that you really don't need to worry about getting one-shotted so much on PFUDOR and you have enough credits lying around to spend on the crazy expensive mage gear you see in auctions since you probably completed your melee set + forged it + got most of the hath perks you wanted before hitting level 375

I do that with my Cold Phase set (in sig) at Hell or below. No problem whatsoever. I do have to remember to switch between Spellspam/Mousemelee scripts whenever I switch equipment sets.

But then you won't care about it once you reach level 400 as you should have resources to do both. (IMG:[ static.tvtropes.org] http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wizardsandmelees_9442.jpg) Our resident Railgun guy here can clear IWBTH IW within 3-5 minutes. Heck, my 1-handed proficiency is .07, 2-handed: 0, and Dual-wield :0 (1-handed was a mistake when starting out, before I knew more of the system). However, my first 150 levels or so were finished before the major overhaul allowing for pc-created monsters, so a while ago. Can't say if its harder to do now. However, i agree that if you're going for efficiency, melee is almost certainly going to level you faster. I stuck with mage pretty much for personal principle (and bragging rights (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) ). Its true that at 310 things got a lot smoother. I can do randoms on pfudor without trouble. Still can't handle battlefest tho, and so far the upper arenas take too long to bother with higher than nightmare (don't even bother with higher than Tt&T yet). Admittedly, problem is partly/largely related to my relatively poor set of equip. Also, still haven't figured out scripts and such so thats another big hit in the efficiency department. Wish you luck if you want to try out a purist route, not many players do I think. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) This post has been edited by walsim: Aug 16 2014, 13:23
