QUOTE(Mika Kurogane @ Aug 19 2014, 10:56) Holy shit. But yeah, just like Noah said, I'll remain silent. Should we give a hint on the failcount at least, to make it easier?
Also, I'll check the raws for the context.
You can provide criicism but they will probably ignore you as usual. Just go thru their thread, me and others pointed out mistakes in the past and they don' do anything.

Yeah, figured as much. Considering how hard people bashed CGRascal in the past though, they're probably going to keep giving them hell, and contribute to their actual trolling... by visiting their galleries to post hateful comments and giving them free GP. It's just as you said - do they actually want to get better, or are they just here to troll? At this point I don't really care much, but I'll still try. Raw starts here: https://e-hentai.org/s/47b245e219/709130-233Example of an accurate translation: https://e-hentai.org/s/6c605a3613/713905-1(info about Yokkora's first tank bonus prints and the story summary are left untranslated, though - but that's up to the translator) I'll pass on the unnecessary caps, symbols, etc, since that isn't related to grammar and context: 1: That was so heavy, did I really bought too much - Improper grammar. This is not how past tense works (you'd use the infinitive form for buy here) and you'd use the present perfect tense instead. Literally "That was heavy, have I bought too much?". The translator went with an improvisation but I think that sounds better. Try not to translate literally - this is a recipe for disaster. 2: I just got home when you've come back - Besides being improper grammar, that'd technically mean both of them were here at the same time. "I got home/back just/right before you did" in order to avoid redundancy. 3: You've come home - "You're back" (home), or "you're home". 4*: Heave-Hoo, umm - Acceptable, but you might want to keep that kind of stuff for giongo. While your approach (kind of) makes sense, "so heavy" definitely sounds much better. The above is my humble imput. Take it as you will, I am neither a Japanese nor an English teacher, nor am I god tier at translating stuff. Far from it. When I look at ChansuLuck's uploads, I'm literally dropping on my chair (okay, that's a whole group with seasoned QC and ED staff, but still). I still see myself as shit tier after several years. This is only intended if you wish to improve. Feel free to fix inconsistencies if you find any. Translators willing to help Laruffii are welcome to provide their input too. If you don't want criticism, just accept Noah's answer and please tell us what your goal is. This post has been edited by Mika Kurogane: Aug 19 2014, 02:18

QUOTE(Mika Kurogane @ Aug 18 2014, 19:17) 2: I just got home when you've come back - Besides being improper grammar, that'd technically mean both of them were here at the same time. "I got home/back just/right before you did" in order to avoid redundancy. Well, I could be. However: QUOTE Use the past perfect tense (had + past participle) to show a state, event, or action that happened before a certain time in the past. -Weinlick hasn’t met his bride yet. (He had not met her before he set the wedding date.) Use the past perfect with the past tense to show which of two past states, events, or actions happened first. The past perfect is often used with by or by the time. -By the time the wedding day rolled around, Weinlick had prepared everything. (First he prepared everything; then the wedding day rolled around.) (Maurer, 1994) The name of the book is Focus on Grammar (Advanced), book A. The author's name is Jay Maurer. The publisher is Addison Wesley Longman Inc. So the sentence would be: "I just had gotten home by the time you came back". DMCA? Don't f&uck. That quotation is for scientific purposes. At last, someone who cares about grammar! Thanks for making this thread slightly more interesting, Apache Phantom. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Unless the rule now is obsolete (20 years should be alright, but some languages tend to fuck with their own grammar pretty often, see German), that's interesting. Thanks for sharing that epic fix! That'll be useful to other translators, at least, and to the poor guy who went through the job of fixing this mess all by himself. That was his first translation too, apparently. Yes, that one may be the optimal sentence. QUOTE DMCA? Don't fuck. Chilling effects alert! Is the book public domain?! Can it be safely quoted?!

I like when translations are more onto literal meaning but not complete literal translation! Just keep english correct while not doing any Woolseyism and you may also keep some keywords that are recurring and most people that like the media enjoys or, at least, knows what it is. For figures of speech, just use translation notes. Whoever is familiar with the Japanese culture will know, the rest can learn if they want. That way the work is still Japanese, just translated in a way that whoever reads can understand the original work.

'Yeah, I had just gotten home when you came back.' I tried it, came out differently for me. Does it make a difference between had just and just had. Or is it some supposition hierachy nonsense. I have no clue.

Had just and just had is another catch, Eso. Kind of the placement of "already" in a sentence. The casual reader won't bother all too much and not too many linguists are into kinky stuff. We can agree that terrible translations are a pain to look at, though. (Had they put actual work into it, I'd feel sorry for them, but judging from the cove and what Noah said, they're highly focused on speed and income and don't plan on getting any better.) QUOTE(Jay Low @ Aug 20 2014, 12:09) For figures of speech, just use translation notes. Whoever is familiar with the Japanese culture will know, the rest can learn if they want. That way the work is still Japanese, just translated in a way that whoever reads can understand the original work. Indeed, this is what TL notes are for. Sometimes, with *a lot* of work, you can magically turn a Japanese pun into an English equivalent so that the meaning remains somehow intact, but it usually doesn't work, so you just use that instead. They're also very important for references - when it comes to series, even "die-hard fans" can miss them. If it is related to culture, you don't really have to write a whole wikipedia article on the matter - just tl;dr it so that it can be understood and still fits in a panel. And yes, again, never, ever try literal translations for any language. If you don't know how to translate something, find an equivalent, keep the context (especially important here) and double-check. An ideal translation is when the raw and the resulting translation are 100% equivalent. This obviously never happens, but the goal is to get as close as possible, without dropping anything important. Adding some funstuff doesn't hurt but you shouldn't take too much freedom either. That ends up in a huge loss of context, even though readers might not spot it. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) About maegaki, atogaki and ads... Well, it's all up to the translation groups, but I encourage people to try and do them too. Whoever says they're "author rants" and "useless stuff that isn't related to the story" does not know what they are talking about and shows laziness denial as it contains valuable information. Gitaigo (phenomimes) can be left alone as they can sometimes be tricky to translate. Attempting to translate all giongo classes will result in a clusterfuck, so you need to focus on what's important. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) Anyone who adds something to a translation for a goal other than getting the translation closer to the way the original reads needs to be shot. Unless they're explicitly doing a joke release or similar. That of course doesn't include things like picking an English dialect or similar as a stand-in for Osaka-ben and the like, or making up a new joke to replace an untranslatable Japanese one. Just never go into a translation with the intent of improving on the original.

I just wish Goatse would make his own blog and keep his translations of E-hentai.
Oh well, a man can dream.

Probably too busy scamming GPs, credits, Hath and more importantly, BTCs (while they still exist). Give the cove HQ a quick check, it's well worth it.
And on a more important note, for future translators, yes, what Thot said.
EDIT: Looks like it's pretty contagious.
