QUOTE(EsotericSatire @ Apr 8 2014, 15:14) *

My workplace was hit by this last year, mandatory reporting of data being compromised is not required in many countries. So even if servers did get hacked and the company did find out they don't necessarily have to tell anyone.

Wow, that is freakin' harsh! You'd think that with such a massive breach in security they would at least give some incentive to report.

I would take what is being said about people being hacked "last year" with a grain salt. There is absolutely no way to tell if your key was compromised or not and it just seems heartbleed is the right culprit for most people when the leak is mostly some other cause.

If you want a fun new game to pass the time, go buy some newspapers (they still exist!) and read their descriptions of Heartbleed.
They range from "a mysterious virus whose origin, purpose and creator are still shrouded in mystery" to a "fatal flaw in the encryption algorithm the Internet is based on" to "a bug in the SSL specification" (at least they got close)

And that quality of information is also the reason they're dying out.

Goodness gracious what an exploit, practically everyone I know and myself has purchased things online. I wonder how serious the effects are and if the security flaw has been exploited tremendously since its inception.

It would be even easier to break cyphers with a quantum computer, won't it?

Welcome to no general software educations in education.

I know it can be pretty inconsequential for many people but still! How can you not know the underlying concept of what underties a pretty big part of modern society.

Considering most people don't even know how a toaster and/or microwave works in the common workplace this doesn't surprise me.

Good list but it would still be best practice to change your password for every site you use (You should be changing them on a regular basis anyway).

My email provider was affected after having their databases stolen. Now I have to change all my passwords a third time. Gladly i use different passowrds for email than for everything else so it's just 5 accounts. Some for spam and work.
