They also have the Sound Renewal version. In 1999, they found that the original separate master tapes for the movie were lost, so they rerecorded all the dialogue, all the sound effects, and all the music. Personally, I mostly prefer the original; it just has a really iconic sound to it. Every time I hear the ending, I think, "Here come the choppers!"

I thought that Patlabor movie clip on youtube sounded wrong. It's the "renewal" edition. Have to take the PCM tracks from the original Japanese laserdisc (which I have) and make a despecialized edition. Nice how they try to improve things and ever so subtly fuck it up. The original was perfect; the renewal sounds subtly wrong all over.
