Phantoms by Dean Koontz and The Shining by Stephen King, both very good books. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

What other books have you read by Dean Koontz? I've been wondering what books of his I should read next. Haven't read any of Stephen King's in a year or two

I've found that Stephen King starts to read like fairytales with adult themes thrown in after a certain age. I can't say I've ever really loved his works, but I'll commend him for being able to keep my attention, and some of the movies based on his books turned out great.

It's interesting that you asked that because I was just thinking the same thing myself the other day and Phantoms is really the only book by Dean Koontz that I've read and thoroughly enjoyed.

I would've suggested Sphere but that's written by Michael Crichton though it's also a very good book that I highly recommend.

If you start on Stephen King again I recommend something 'light' like The Shining or Salem's Lot, nothing like The Dark Tower series, the second book starts off really confusing though the first book was good, one day I'll have to tackle them again.

I agree, I believe he starts them off that way to give the allusion of normality and for us the readers to like or at least sympathize with the characters when bad things happen. The write a lot like Greek tragedies if you take the horror element out of it.

I also agree that the movie adaptions based on his novels turned out great, though I'll always enjoy the books better...would be interesting to see them do a film version of his Dark Tower series.

"Acts of Conscience" by William Barton.

Holy cow!
After Mass Effect 3, I thought my love for science fiction had died.
Apparently, it is not.
Warning to most people though, this fiction is for mature audience only.
First, the main character is at the very best an antihero.
Second, humanity is portray in a realistic manner.
So there is no Star Trek, humans helping alien crap.
But there is also no Independence Day, humans commit genocide.
It is more of some humans are evil, but most humans are "meh", and a few good men.
(and a few good women.)
In conclusion, a very nice piece of Sci-Fi that is not afraid to poke at the dark side of humanity.
However, it still points out that human beings do have conscience.
Unfortunately, this book also made me realize I am not part of a few good men.
In fact, I am the "some humans are evil."
And my only defense is I was just following orders.
(also, my conscience is now merely another dead body stuffed in the closet.)

The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett.
Not bad for an old detective novel.

Blood and Guts in High School by Kathy Acker.
I just barely started this so I don't have much to say about it yet.

I read "A Feast Unknown" again. That book never gets boring. It's so hilarious.

I'm currently reading "Galactic Patrol" by E.E. "Doc" Smith. Fun book with dildo-like, intertialess space ships. Also, the battle stuff is pretty awesome since they have a ton of non-humanoid aliens rocking the shit by doing stuff like wielding 14 axes simultaneously.

I read 'Walden' by Thoreau, and liked it. This guy thought much like I do.

I read 'Undercover Economist' by Tim Harford, and it told me why Starbucks is charging different prices for different coffee drinks, even though making of each drinks costs them roughly the same. And a few other things, which several previous economist books didn't mention.

And I keep reading Perry Mason novels, because they make much more sense in the logic of events and character portrayal than all big bestsellers of the recent years I red.

The Gap Into Conflict: The Real Story.

I'll be done with it in, like, two or three more days, then I have to finish up The Edge series. And by then maybe A Dance With Dragons or Wise Man's Fear will be out in paperback by that point, if not, then I'll continue with The Gap Into Vision: Forbidden Knowledge, which might take me a week or so.

Stephen King, yes, most definitely, usually enjoy his works.

Cell, however; was in my honest opinion not one of his best works, as in depth and detailed as he is I found Cell lacking in both detail and character development.

I found myself enjoying the supporting characters more and wanting to know how their story was resolved and liking the main character less and less and at the end simply not caring about his story. The professor, the girl and the man and his cat were my favorite characters in the book.

The characters added towards the end were pretty much card-board cut-outs and served little more than a plot device and as it turns out a Deus ex machina.

In short: It would probably have made a better movie than book. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
