On one hand the Biden administration told staff that they could use the 'sex positive' 'queer safe' 'kink facilitation' chat rooms but on the other hand... the Biden administration fired many staffers in 2020 and 2021 using similar chat logs and declarations that they encouraged staff that it was safe to make.




Its like working unknowingly whilst have the sword of Damocles swinging over your head.


Maybe they never watched Training day.


Its like at my work, people were surprised with 100% accuracy I 'guessed' everyone that got made redundant a month after a training day where top executives created a 'safe space' for people to talk about their real view of the org and how long people wanted to stay with the company.

More than 110 taxpayer assistance offices are set to close, leaving vast swaths of the country without in-person help during the busiest tax season of the year.

An atmosphere of despair has now taken hold within the walls of IRS offices.

'It's now routine to see people crying in the office,' said one union leader outside Washington. 'Managers are walking around apologizing for firings they had no decision in.'

Another source put it more bluntly: 'We are paralyzed.'

But how are they going to audit every 600 dollar transaction the poors make without all the extra staff (including armed IRS agents) that Biden hired?

The funny thing is, if they made the tax software better they would not need a lot of the staff.

In Australia the system pre-fills all the info that they already have on you. In the US they try to catch you out for not reporting what they already know.

That sounds like the real reason they give..... It is kind of nonsense though. Here you can opt in for private enterprise tax accountants to get the tax data then they help you process your receipts and deductions.


For small businesses it makes a lot of sense. For individuals, the tax is not that complicated unless you have a lot of investments. Though a lot of firms will provide the tax information to you and the government here anyways.

Well, the thing is, people these days don't go to an accountant, they go to Free File.

The front end to the Free File program is a list of providers on the IRS web site. The list is deliberately not sorted. Firms can't pay to be higher on it, or get bolded text, or a larger font. In fact, the order is randomized every time you load it.

These range from big, household name tax preparation firms like H&R Block that have walk-in franchises in every city, to tiny fly-by-night businesses that nobody has ever heard of before, that maybe have a single small accounting firm somewhere in the country behind them. Others are purely e-businesses. By design, all of these get exactly the same presentation.

In order to be in the Free File program, they need to be free for someone to use, not necessarily you. The business model of these firms is to use the link from IRS.gov as advertising and try to trick as many people as possible into paying them instead. And maybe, to harvest peoples' information.

In the context of this typical crazy way of doing things (people want it free, government may not develop the software, so you are the product, thousands of dollars at stake, very sensitive information being handed about, government may not treat any of the firms differently, did we mention people don't want to pay) I imagine the government really doesn't want to be involved in giving taxpayer information directly to Itty-Bitty Totally Legit Free File Soft, on a massive scale, for liability reasons.

The identifying information that people have to provide to use Free File is limited enough that any company in the program could mass hoover everyone's private tax data without them ever knowing said company exists just by buying their basic particulars and SSN from a data broker.

* I wrote this based on how it worked a few years ago. I see it's slightly different now. H&R Block is no longer participating, and they each get an infobox where they can use a logo & bolded text. Still all the same size & random order.
