With Ghostbusters Frozen Empire being released on disk, they are trying to sneak Ghostbusters 2016 into ghostbusters collections.

I've looked around, the sets with Ghostbusters 2016 are going for a discount already.

Which is kinda funny, because I don't remember the last time a studio decided to retroactively add a subtitle to a failed "reboot" that used the original title in theatres. Like they regretted spending their once-in-a-decade opportunity to call a new movie simply Ghostbusters. Which is a stupid practice anyway.
Or maybe they just wanted to distance themselves from the movie's reputation hoping confused grandparents buy it as a Christmas present thinking it's something else.

Anyway, it's definitely worth seeing especially as a double feature with the original as a sort of masterclass on how not to make a movie.

Oh its been that long, I just remember arguing with the guy in store. He was so sad I wouldn't buy the box set with Ghostbusters 2016 and instead like everyone else we were paying more for the set without it. They also had to manually insert the digital code in pre-ordered sets, so I said the set would be ruined and I would return it if it even touched the box.

I've seen a bit of the movie like 10-20 minutes on TV, I said if it even made me laugh once I would watch the movie. It failed.

They also made the African American character stupid, when the joke in the first movie was Winston was the one with the most real qualifications. I don't know why they didn't use female actors from SNL, the movie might have stood a chance.


e: Oh dear lordy, they were from SNL. That show must be dead.

e2: looks like their live viewership has crashed, but when counting social media somehow (which is totally legit) then its the highest it has ever been.

Oh no there's not a single good joke in the entire movie, but it is fun to watch knowing they spent over $200M on it and somehow the film passed all the corporate suits and yes men agreeing that this is a good idea that will surely be a hit.
Although it is likely more fun with friends. You definitely laugh at the movie, not with it. Alone the experience might be a bit more miserable.

Also the audio editing in it is insane. It's like they cut out every second of silence from the movie. Even if nothing is happening or nobody's even on screen, they added in some ADR'd dialogue so that someone is constantly talking the entire time. Or better yet, yelling. Even during scene transitions and establishing shots, someone's already ad libbing a failing comedy routine in the background. Starting from the very first scene. It'd be pretty maddening if it wasn't so funny thinking that someone made this.
Especially as a sequel to Ghostbusters where the humor is for the most part pretty dry and some of the most memorable scenes are like: "a guy looks at another guy in disbelief." And it's infinitely funnier.

Anytime i think of Ghostbusters these days I just get the "Bustin'" song stuck in my head for a couple days

The problem is that Paul Feig had the brilliant idea of letting the actors ad lib the whole movie like Bridesmaids. However the actors had experiences and funny stories they could draw upon for that movie. They did not even know what a ghostbuster was before this film. Also hard to make jizz jokes if you don't have a dick apparently.

That only makes it funnier because they didn't even have to start from a blank slate. They had an established universe ripe for more stories and all of the public's goodwill on their side. And they still failed horribly.
I admit that it would've been almost impossible to make a movie that didn't get unfavorably compared to the original because the original had three decades of childhood nostalgia on its side, but it should've been pretty easy to make a decent mediocre adaptation of the premise set in a modern age. Which is on the surface what the 2016 movie is, if you watch it muted.

I'm not sure they had ever even watched the movie or anything beyond some promotional posters, because it just seemed like they did not understand at all why Ghostbusters was so popular. It's basically a movie about a couple of friends with conflicting personalities starting a small business and then dealing with fame. They're not even heroic or cool. They're just relatable regular guys running an extermination business that happens to specialize in ghosts. The main premise would've worked even if they were doing something completely different. The inclusion of ghosts just gives it some unique flair and enables a couple silly gags.

The 2016 ghostbusters is four women with more or less identical personalities screaming improvised comedy for 2 hours. Everything is "awesome" all the time, everyone who isn't one of the ghostbusters is stupid and lame for doubting how super cool and smart and the best the ghostbusters are, and then there's a 30 minute CGI battle at the end where they perform Matrix John Woo tricks to beat up all the ghosts because they're so cool.

It sounds like an odd complaint for "a movie about ghosts", but there's absolutely nothing grounding the 2016 film. In the original the finances of the failing business, taking out a second mortgage, risking their reputations in the academic field etc. all lends to make the ghostbusters feel human. In the "remake" you get this sense like it's just another weekend adventure for these superpowered girlbosses who are the smartest and funniest and best at anything they do and will continue to be awesome and move on to their next adventure if the business doesn't take off. Which isn't really ever even a threat, since like 2 minutes into the film there's already glowing green monsters attacking people in the open so it makes no sense why anyone would ever doubt the need for ghostbusters. There's just zero adversity. AND I WONDER WHY THAT DOESN'T MAKE FOR A GOOD COMEDY HMM MUST BE BECAUSE THEY'RE WOMEN.

Bill Murray says the first movie worked because they already had the right chemistry between the actors/comedians, the right culture and working relationships for doing skits and a writing team that they all liked at least till the end of the movie. Well even ghostbusters 2 is kinda lame as a comedy. Its good as a ghostbusters kids film. Its like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the first film is still great but the second is lame.

In the early SNL cast films they put a lot of effort into script development to take narrow concepts and make them into proper movies. They also threw out a lot of ideas. It was a lot like Monty Python films where they wanted to murder each other by the end as it took a lot more rewrites and reshoots than it appeared.
When SNL decided to officially make films from whatever they had lying around only Blues Brothers and Wayne's World worked, all the rest crashed and burned. Ghostbusters 2016 just continued the legacy.

I've seen some behind the scenes footage and they definitely didn't throw out any ideas with ghostbusters 2016. Paul Feig is the posterchild for "toxic positivity" and there were so many examples of the actors basically "warming up" and just throwing out random nonsense to see if something funny would come out of it (pretty normal for comedians brainstorming ideas for skits), but anything they said he would praise as the funniest thing ever and tell them to keep going. Even the actors looked kinda uneasy at times, like they had enough self awareness to know it wasn't even a good joke yet somehow it ended up in the final cut.

That's the kind of total ineptitude from a director that I feel compelled to like a trainwreck you can't look away from.
