I happen to partially agree, but only because I think I am relaxed enough about gender to not give a fuck if someone calls me 'he' or 'she' or whatever.

Its a problem with external validation of self esteem. People that rely entirely on external validation either tend to be toxic to others or psychologically fragile. Self esteem and self conceptualization entirely based on external validation is fleeting and fragile.

This is why you have people that self destruct and go ballistic when someone accidentally uses a wrong pronoun or their old name.

Dead naming in the drag queen community was considered rude or bitchy but it wasn't a hate crime.

Anyway, this person didn't even know what being transgender was until high school, but had harbored such feelings for a long time before then, if they are to be believed.

The probability of being consistently trans is vanishingly low, but not zero. The probability of rapid onset gender dysphoria and retroactively reassessing memories is very high, but not 100%.

That's complicated here. You can call your friends dumbass usually if you are same gender. Or you can give excessive complements as well. However if the gender x friend matrix is incorrect then its now a hate crime.

Also if you insult someone because you think they are a friend but they do not, then its potentially gaslighting which is also a crime and should be reported to the UN Human rights commission.

People usually don't go around arbitrarily insulting people, majority of people want to have a basic level politeness. So what will happen is people will just avoid anyone non-binary or with different pronouns due to the risk of accidentally committing a hate crime. Here its now an offense if the person perceives it as an offense even if you did not intentionally mean to offend. People are not psychic, people will just avoid interactions as much as possible.

In your example, going up to someone at random and saying you will not use their pronouns because they rely on external validation for self-esteem would be a hate crime and you would face gaol or being fired. So I doubt it would happen. Instead people will avoid them, and they may not get job opportunities as the laws become more insane. Not hiring someone because of their alternate gender status is also discrimination though.
