New York City was the financial capital of the richest country on Earth. Sydney is not. NYC has been run by corrupt Democrats for generations; see Tammany Hall. New York State has the highest overall tax burden of all US states, and NYC is one of the few cities with a city-level income tax as well. With all the billionaires and Wall Street people living there, that generated a huge amount of revenue that the government just wasted.
Rural New York is farmland full of conservatives, so the money got spent on the city instead.
But all that is changing. Billionaires, high earners and the financial industry are fleeing New York City & State for low-tax red states as fast as they can go.
This is a good example to bring up when the dems start saying "Tax the rich* (* you qualify)" and "Pay your 'fair' share". They have been taxing the rich, for decades, and the money just disappeared. But this time Communism will work; it just wasn't implemented right.
The Dems really shot themselves in the foot. They were the ones who wanted to shut everything down for Covid; conservatives wanted to ignore it. During the pandemic shutdown, all the investment banks went to remote work, and that was when the light started going on for people that they no longer had to live in NYC, or in any place that started to raise taxes on them.

NYC has double the population of Sydney but 100x the annual spending (1b vs 107b).
At the state level NY state has double the pop and double the budget, makes sense. NYC spends more on 100k asylum seekers than it takes for the budget of Sydney?!
