IDK; I think that when applied appropriately it can be a good thing - but I'd not call what you are describing as "feminism;" I'd call that sexism. There's a difference between supporting sexual/gender equality and wanting to reverse the current situation (and I think most of us can agree that there are times that exist where men are at an advantage over women).

It's certainly true that feminism in academia has co-opted conflict theories. But I think it is a bit of a stretch to assume that it was about women specifically uniting against men. I think many of them wanted for men to reflect on what they defined as 'masculine' and decide if some of their predispositions might be harmful to their own wellbeing, too.

In academia? Radical feminism is just the feminist movement mushed together Marxism. However marxism definitely existed when the current movement gain steam after WW2. So it probably isn't too much of a stretch, especially when you look at their original slogans. The difference probably was that it was also largely a Christian movement in the west to begin with. The radical feminists since the 70s just made it more marxist.

I suppose its the current gen from the 2000s on wards that made it profitably merge with mainstream corporatism.

However it really did not take long for the radicals to push the narrative that men dominated society therefore all social oppression was due to men.


I suppose what they never stopped to ask was whether any of the traditional roles or norms make men and women happy? I would like to think that generally more freedom is always good. So equality of opportunity is great.

I can tell you that because I didn't give a shit about football (american football) and other stuff typically associated with masculinity, I was not well received by pre-university school peers. So in that sense, no: traditional roles and norms did not make me happy. Nor did things like fraternities.

That isn't to say no "masculine" things make me happy. But I still see it as a huge waste of energy when other things interest me more.

For people who are happy with those things, that's fine, just don't try to pressure others into it.

I have mixed feelings about the up and coming generations; on one hand they seem to have some good ideals, but at the same time they appear at least as steeped in consumerism as their parents were. So I'm not sure if it'll result in anything meaningful.

There are certainly those who see it that way - but I am not convinced that most "feminists" see it that way, even today. I think it's an unfortunate case where the loud minority got the media attention for being outrageous, and ended up changing public perception of feminism as a whole.
Possibly helped by socially conservative pundits labelling those outrageous people as feminists in a successful attempt to discredit feminism.

In short, I think it's a problem of bullshit in the media primarily. I've met two people who are actually the "kill all men" type, both on IRC. Never met one IRL. And those people were both quickly blown the fuck out by people who actually had read feminist literature (mostly by asking rhetorical questions to make them sound stupid).
