Minoxidil and Finasteride.
Minoxidil delays follicle death by increasing the thickness of the nourishing flesh around it. Otherwise, over time, the follicle to get thinner and shallower in the scalp. You see the symptom of this as each hair strand getting finer and finer and as hairs fall out, if you look at the end, you notice it was very shallowly rooted. Eventually not enough of the follicle remains deep enough in the scalp to survive the follicle dormancy period and thus it dies never to be replaced. Minoxidil should be applied well before the follicles became thin and shallow. What people think are new hair growth is simply the dormant follicles starting up again because they were stimulated by the Minoxidil.
Finasteride is more effective than Minoxidil since it fights that testosterone by-product more effectively. Anecdotally, Finasteride seems to keep on working for older men whereas Minoxidil has less effect as the man ages. So if Minoxidil doesn't seem to work, maybe it's time to hand off your hopes to Finasteride.
