Soulfused my shield (after all, I paid to IW it, it's not likely I will find a replacement any time soon)
Also dropped Heartseeker ability. I don't know if it's broken or something else, but I don't see a difference with it (the buff itself, with or without ability) being on or off anymore, so I just use Arcane Focus, even when I'm using much more normal attacks than spells.
Maybe it's a broken mage-boosting feature that's causing this situation.
