Continuing the observations (Gift Factor 211% vs 105%):

Monster __1: Mechanoid / PL 1242 / Gift Factor 211% / Battles Won: 10 / Killing Blows: 2 / Total Gifts: 44 / Gift Times: 12 [(2x) 2 gifts + (6x) 3 gifts + (3x) 5 gifts + (1x) 7 gifts]
Monster __2: Dragonkin / PL 1242 / Gift Factor 211% / Battles Won: 9 / Killing Blows: 3 / Total Gifts: 39 / Gift Times: 13 [(4x) 2 gifts + (6x) 3 gifts+ (2x) 4 gifts + (1x) 5 gifts]
Monster __3: Celestial / PL 1242 / Gift Factor 211% / Battles Won: 7 / Killing Blows: 2 / Total Gifts: 35 / Gift Times: 12 [(4x) 2 gifts + (6x) 3 gifts + (1x) 4 gifts + (1x) 5 gifts]
Monster 100: Undead / PL 1242 / Gift Factor 105% / Battles Won: 9 / Killing Blows: 0 / Total Gifts: 17 / Gift Times: 12 [(8x) 1 gift + (3x) 2 gifts + (1x) 3 gifts]

At least this time my strongest monsters brought the "expected" amount of gifts. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/heh.gif)

Honestly I would like the amount of chaos tokens to have a greater influence on the value of Gift Factor. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) Something like 1% at each level of each attribute (minus Scavenging, which would continue 2.5%), instead of the current 0.5%. It's 936 Chaos Token vs 3 Chaos Token, but I only get "twice" as many gifts. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) It is very disproportionate. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Nice, Merciful blow is so fun.
I was going to look at if merciful blow + shortsword (bleeding effect) was viable to improve clear times on SG arena's, but never got round to it. Not sure the extra OC cost would make it worth it, though it has the same cooldown.

my most hateful and bloodthirsty strike unit is operational... for now. well, it's a blunt weapon, so that would make it... bonethirsty? i had names ready for each element and was going to accept O5F4 or O4F5, as they are close enough on paper that it will take some empiricism to determine the true optimum

Oh yeah thanks for reminding me that in 2H (and maybe Niten) that elemental strike damage isn't much. It's not that much in 1H either (counter attacks) if you don't use Haste. That leaves only DW as the melee style where they reach their full 10% of total damage potential.

Actually elemental strikes won't do their full potential in DW either, because DW can heavily rely on Frenzy Blows to clear out around maybe half of enemies.

Not to mention OFC, too...

My old DW data suggests that elemental strikes made up around 5% of my damage over a full IWBTH fest.

In DWD, it made up ~11%, although notably this is with 2x dark strike and that probably means it was on dark day, too. Looking at some others... I see similar amounts on other days of the week, using different strikes (almost 12% on fire day with 2x fire strike!).

My conclusion is that in real play the type of elemental strike makes absolutely fuck all difference and min-maxing around that is possibly the least effective use of anyone's money there possibly is. (Switch to mage, if you're trying to optimise your play...)

It's a hindrance actually. Killing main target fast is inconvenient.

It should be pointed out though that even if OFC/Frenzy are clearing out half the enemies and thus reducing DW elemental strike to 5% of overall damage, in terms of real time the DW elemental strike could still be considered to be the full 10% or so (assuming that OFC/Frenzy are cast fairly quickly and do not take up significant time).

So DW is probably by far the melee style that best utilizes elemental strikes. Also spike shields are more effective in DW and 2H than in 1H, because 1H stuns all the enemies and reduces the number of infected targets.

Arctic, Shocking, Tempestuous, and Fire when paired with their spike shields may all be better than Dark/Holy against regular monsters in the DW style.

Even though the difference is small I do think that trying to get a good elemental strike can be useful. I estimated a year ago that a typical difference in elemental strike (+10% compared to the next worser strike) is overall worth 2 Butchers.

Back then I didn't consider this dilution issue for 1H and 2H so for those styles a better elemental strike would only be worth 1 Butcher. For DW still 2 Butchers. And considering that Cold Strike these days is unexpectedly 10% stronger than Dark/Holy...it could be 20% stronger than them on DW (better spike shield) so cold strike DW could be worth 4 Butchers.

People reforge to get Butcher, so if you have enough money I think it's not necessarily a waste to reforge or buy for specific elements.
