-snip-
I'm asking all those questions, because the last time someone tried to make a serious study of that (I don't remember who, sorry, it was more than 1 year ago), the clear times he had were in this order, from lowest to biggest:
1) Imp Shortsword
2) Imp Rapier
3) No imp Rapier
4) Nop imp Shortsword
What you're saying and the past studies confirm what I usually say: Imp Shortsword tends to be effective only for those who are
determined to play that way (which OFC is my case), to get it to work. It can only be crap/disappointing for those who "try" it half-assedly, without deploying 100% of the means that are necessary for it to be effective. Imp Rapier is a bit more tolerant regarding this, so it can probably be a good idea to play Imp Rapier if one's efficiency at landing Imperil (whatever the reason) is not optimal.
Anyway, I already knew that overall it's quite a niche. That's not a discovery. But at least, your contribution shows that it really pays off if you know in advance that you're going to play that way. Having Imperil with the highest magic accuracy and prof factor possible is really, really crucial. I was also expecting the shortsword to be rather "meh" if one uses Power Armor of Slaughter, which is somehow highlighted by your results.
My conclusion: pick a shortsword only if you're
determined to get the best out of it. And if you're intending to play with Power of Protection/Warding. In which case it pays off.
Playing Imperil 1H (whether it's Rapier or Shortsword, or even Waki) is also an excellent idea to brace oneself for the switch to the mage playstyle, since when doing so one will already be familiar with spamming Imperil.
Overall, nothing I didn't know already.
I'll keep repeating that rapier is not the only way to go, and that choosing a shortsword is a good idea for those who want to get going with a lower initial investment, at the cost of following a rigorous path that doesn't tolerate any lack regarding spell casting.
I suppose we can call that path, that path of the "rigorous and disciplined swordsman". (IMG:[
