Got defeated just now on a random encounter. It's been a while since that's happened. I got down to exactly 1 HP, so spark didn't trigger.

you basically ask for the timer to be removed, so instead of missing it, the botter will be on the warning page and could press ok then answer it anytime without any repercussion at all.

unless... you wants the warning page to also have a timer, which defeat your idea's purpose as you could miss it too just like how you missed the riddlemaster.

I don't get it.
The timer is on the riddle page, so adding another page before the riddle page is ever loaded (thus not giving any clue on which riddle was loaded) could not be an issue.
The user, after clicking ok, would cause the riddle to load, and face identical situation as without the page, the only thing is that he would be ready.
A bot would probably instantly realize he's on the warning page, go through it then behave in a completely identical way as before the warning page was added (whether it try to solve the riddle or fail on purpose or whatever), no more or less penalties than before.
The only ones getting a (positive) change would be humans.

That's what captchas are (supposed to be) for, making humans access easier and bots access harder/worthless.

Correct, you don't get it. I am sorry but, I can't go into details of how the riddles work against botting. But it relies on the sudden unannounced appearance. You could of course try botting yourself, and find out how the riddles hinder you. But please don't, we don't want another catgirl on the moon.
