And how can I find out whether its private or public IP if u don't mind asking ?

Private IP
It is a IP provided by your router to communicate within LAN not internet.Any private IP can not go to Internet.If any packet try to go, the packet will be automatically dropped by router.
You can check your private IP by going command prompt and type 'ipconfig' and enter in Windows system. and if you are a Linux user go to terminal and type 'ifconfig'.

public IP
It is your IP address to communicate through internet.
You can check it by going some websites like What is my IP Address?, Check your Ip,Trace Ip,Change Ip and More.. etc.
Basically your public IP is the IP of that particular interface of your router that connects to internet.
So if you and your friend are connecting to Internet through same router.Both you will get same public IP address but your private IP will be different.

(PS:- I am telling you this because 6 months ealier i was also doing same things as you. Doing port forwarding , changing router settings etc .
Later the issue i found was that i have public IP. And my ISP is dick and refused to provide me private one ,even when i requested them to do so.
So my whole plan of H@H failed (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/cry.gif) )

wow. a section to close ports and a section to open ports? i didn't setup many routers but it's the first time i see such a thing.

according to descriptions, first section is to *close* ports as a reaction to certain triggers - those you'll specify. kind of a firewall.
the second one is to permanently *open* ports for certain programs. for example, if Torrent or eMule don't work you'll have to check the Virtual Server.

long story short, configure the second one. but still, you'll have to assign a static IP. go into the Connection tab of control panel on your pc, identify the name of the connection you use and assign an address. if you pick a high one as DJNoni suggested, you won't have to configure the other pcs on your LAN.
also, that very IP will be the one you'll use in router's config.

Three ranges of private IP are there.10.0.0.0-10.255.255.255 , 172.16.0.0-172.31.255.255, 192.168.0.0-192.168.255.255.

Rest are all Public IP.

and the public one shows - 116.1xx.xxx

Just my anecdote: All testing programs I tried for some reasons said my ports were blocked but I have no problem running a small server and H@H from my home computer. So I think just try it if you feel you have properly port-forwarded.

Please excuse me. i was not very clear earlier.
private IP will always be with every system. Just because you don't have public IP does not mean you can't do H@H , you can.Motive to make your system accessible by EH.

It's not bad news yet.
because in private IP case you can forward a port and make an exception in your firewall. I am not just saying local firewall of your Computer(which is easy). But you also need to have any control over the firewall between the Internet and your computer ,If there is one.


IN simple language.
If 116.1xx.xxx is IP of your router. then there is solution. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (It is in most of the case)

But if 116.1xx.xxx is IP of your ISP then (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) (you have to talk to them to either port forward or give you public ip) (Because in this case they are routing everything from there router and treating there customer as LAN users . SO here this router also needs to be configured .and they might have a firewall also which blocks outside access) (It happens in few unfortunate cases)(it was my case)

Many routers wor with either MAC address or computer name so that a static IP is not needed.

Today (or yesterday, depending on the time of each one (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/heh.gif) ; besides I still did not go to sleep, then it is still today (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) ), by some miracle, my internet was relatively stable after more than 30 bad days.
