The Las Vegas Strip is not in Las Vegas. The Strip is in Paradise NV. Paradise NV is an unincorporated township, that envelopes all of the strip and everything to the east of the strip. Our mail however, is addressed "Las Vegas, NV"
Las Vegas, which was incorporated, tried to annex the strip back in the 50's or so. The Mob (Those "Italian Immigrants" (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) ) would have nothing of it. They saw the annexation of the strip would bring taxes and regulations.
They bought "all" of the City commissioners, the annexation failed horribly, and Las Vegas hasn't tried again since.
So the next time you hear "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas", You can reply "Cause it never happened in Vegas". Cause it didn't!
