QUOTE(hitokiri84 @ Dec 2 2008, 11:29) I would prefer realistic jet combat at least since I have a degree in Aerospace. For other stuff, less realism is usually more fun.
I guess you're part of that 1% then! But seriously, Ace Combat wouldn't be much fun if you spent 20 minutes flying to your objective with no resistance, fired your entire payload of four missiles and spent another 20 minutes flying back to the base, would it? QUOTE(mezzo138 @ Dec 2 2008, 19:04) your a game designer, Pheonix? any notable games you had a hand in making?
Nope, I haven't worked on a game that's been released yet... I'm working at a small company doing a music learning game in the form of an action RPG targeted at 8-10 year-olds. The interaction device is a musical keyboard, and the aim is to teach the player notes, chords and intermediate playing skills. I can't go into too much detail, but with luck it will be out in about a year, and if it's going to be as good as I think it is, it's going to be the coolest commercial (that is, outside of the US military, which is the worlds #1 investor in and user of software-based learning) bit of teaching software ever. Seriously. Of course, there isn't really much cool teaching software out there.

Pressing one button to fire cluster missiles and destroy 4-5 aircraft at the same time isn't fun either. It's not even rental worthy.

Not if you were a pornstar. See, this is like an analogy. I think internet porn would be boring to a male pornstar the same way an unrealistic jet sim would be to someone whose field is in aerospace, i.e. me. I bet if there was a porn or game related to what ever profession it is you're in, you'd want it to be realistic so you could enjoy it.

So you're in tech support huh? [ www.callcentermovie.com] http://www.callcentermovie.com/movie/movie2.htmlBest Tech Support satire I've ever seen. If you don't laugh at this, then there's something wrong with you. This post has been edited by hitokiri84: Dec 3 2008, 21:16

I don't really buy the whole "I don't like games that revolve around my daily routine in a less realistic way" point of view. It's too broad a generalization (though I don't doubt that you truly dislike Ace Combat, probably just like a lot of non-aerospace-bachelors.
After all, the Sims is one of the most popular games ever, right? Pretty much all the martial artists I know around my age like fighting games such as Tekken or Street Fighter, and they're definitely not realistic. Same with skate boarders and the Tony Hawk's games (which are *certainly* not realistic). I've played guitar most of my life, and I still like Guitar Hero. And so on.
I'd say the point is exactly that I don't want it realistic, so I can enjoy it. After all, if Guitar Hero was just like playing real guitar, why not just play real guitar? If the Sims involved actually taking calls in a cubicle for 8 hours a day (8 hours of play time that is), who on earth would play it? A little realism in the right places can work well though. I like that Gran Turismo lets you customize many aspects of the cars internal workings like gear ratios, damping and suspension, and I'm sure that car nuts (whether professional or hobby) would like this element too, since they can apply their rather specialised expertise to the problems, much like you can (or can't) apply yours to an aeronautical problem. I also like that the cars don't break if you crash - the penalty to your speed is enough of a punishment to make the player understand that crashing is bad. A feature like crashing and destroying the car would be better used in a game about crashing, such as Destruction Derby, Carmageddon or Burnout, that focus on car crash mayhem.

Well it's different for me I guess. I think seeing an aircraft pull impossible maneuvers and carry impossible payloads is ridiculous, because it creates misnomers and misperceptions for anyone that is not knowledgeable about aircraft. Don't say it doesn't either, because I've had people try to tell me a fictional aircraft in AC6 was a real aircraft. (I don't remember it's name, but it's supposed to be superior to a F-22 Raptor, which is completely retarded. What, that would make it a sixth generation fighter? (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)) People in general are far less educated about aircraft than they are about cars, guitars, or daily life (gran turismo, guitar hero, and the Sims, receptively.) That's not to say I don't enjoy those other games due to their lack of realism. That would be because I don't take them as seriously as I do for aircraft. In fact, I am quite good at Guitar Hero thanks to it being completely unrealistic. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Just read back a page to where I was talking to cptkleenex. I recently took up Jade Empire... does anyone else think this game is seriously overrated? I mean... it got 9.9 on IGN. In comparison, the Baldur's Gate games got 9.4 each. Final Fantasy 7 and 10 got 9.5 each. The list goes on. I've heard people, people who I know to be fairly sane, say that this is the best action RPG ever. Please tell me I'm not alone in thinking that this is, well, BS?

I thought it was so-so for a BioWare game. It certainly wasn't better than the first KOTOR or Mass Effect.

My sentiments exactly! I've completed some pretty abysmal SNES style RPGs and 3D RPGs alike, but I'm *this* close to just uninstalling Jade Empire and trying to forget about it forever. Between the clunky combat that makes up half of the game and the rather linear series of typical fetch-quests... there's not much to pull it up above par. I guess the visuals were pretty good for the time, but then again, FFX came out in 2001, JE in 2005, and in my opinion FFX looks at least as good. It also has better sound, music and *much* better voice acting, in the same copious amounts.
Ok, enough whining.. It just gets to me when average stuff is overrated this way. Felt the same about Fable, although somewhat less.
