No, you can't. There are practical limits to how many rotations you can perform (360 at a guess) for each base image. There are practical limits to how many ellipses you can draw (and how many overlaps there can be) before a human can't solve them. At the very extreme end, there is a graphic limit size and you can basically extrapolate how many images can be generated with these constraints and build a rainbow table holding these images. It's nowhere near BIG.

Let's take an image that's 1024*768 in size, that's 786,432 pixels. Assume each pixel has 256 different shades it could be (monochrome image, after all). That's a total of 201,326,592 images. It's bloody trivial for a computer that has a rainbow table to look them up. And consider the sheer number of RMs that must have been generated over the past, oh, say, month.

You just don't know what you're talking about. Really. I'll give you a hint: factorials.

QUOTE(Tenboro @ Jul 18 2013, 19:04) *

You're not using the term "colloquially", you're using it "wrong".

A rainbow table is a precomputed table of cryptographic hash function results for reverse lookup purposes. Even if you generalize it to saying that it's a table of results of any function, at any point in time, PONIES™ can generate 12884901882 possible images. Since the generator isn't public, it is not possible to build a precomputed table of results. Every time you get a riddle it will give you one and exactly one possible image, so if you were to try doing it that way, you're in for a ride. Not to mention, it would be invalidated the second I change *anything*.

No? Then you are using a truly random element in your PONIES generation system? Then I retract my statement. You are indeed correct about my failure in mathematics as well; it is currently an infeasibly huge space. Shows that one should not type in haste and repent in leisure.

Also, I grant you that rainbow tables are generated by algorithms. But how do these algorithms work? By feeding all possible inputs within a given input space through the hashing algorithm and recording the resulting output. So does it matter whether I do the work manually or using a software programme to do it? Except for time, I hardly see how it matters.

QUOTE

Want to try something different from spewing misinformation about things you know nothing about?

Sure. How about I try to admit my mistakes when I'm wrong. Something I'm sure you have much experience with.

QUOTE

The simple lack of 24/7 capable bots is proof enough that it hasn't been broken. If someone did, they sure are keeping it tight to their chest.

And why would you need a 24/7 capable bot when it only has to solve PONIES twice or thrice an hour?

QUOTE

And PONIES™ is not usable as a CAPTCHA. A wild guess has a 25% chance of being correct. It is useless to counter spambots and similar. What it is, is a working system to make bots significantly less effective at playing the game, while being much less intrusive and having a much, much lower error rate than the average CAPTCHA for human visitors.
Which you cannot do, because like I said, there is no way to precompute a table.

So... previous images are never repeated? No discernible pattern in how ponies show up? Wow, well done.

While the current system might not be workable as a full-blown CAPTCHA system, the underlying image generation code (plus accompanying reference ponies) would work just fine.

Remember that 256^786432 ? Even if several PONIES™ showed every second (Which they don't as there are not so many HV players at the same time to achive that) there's enough different images for trillions of years.

If PONIES™ will ever be broken it will be through AI techniques (bayesian classifiers, neural networks or maybe swarms) which are inexact and can reduce the number of images by allowing a good amount of uncertainty (just like our brain does). Yet, that still requires image preprocessing to feed these techniques, which I doubt is trivial.

And also, please stop, you are not proving anything.

After all, the subject matter is about math (and not the interpretation of the math, i.e. Statistics), and so you do get a definite answer/conclusion and you can't use the art of rhetoric to its full power— any BS attempt will have to be separated from the main argument, allow it to at least retain some of its saneness, i.e. boring... For all intents and purposes, as in, you won't be able to pre-determine the state of the server's random number generator.

It matters, because if you have the generator you can generate the full result table as quickly as your computer can generate the images, while in this situation, you are strictly limited. Pre-calculated tables are simply infeasible.

what is this I don't even

Well. If you have solved a million PONIES™, the chance that a new riddle would be the exact same as any of the old ones would be something like 1 in 12884. I wouldn't be particularly concerned.

Assumptions:
1. Whenever we humans can't tell who it is, it's Fluttershy.
2. Bots can never quite tell who it is.

Therefore, bots should always guess Fluttershy!

Dear xmagus

It has come to my attention that you have entered into a lengthy dispute with Tenboro of E-hentai.org regarding PONIES™. While I believe that it is every person's right to voice their opinion, I am writing this letter to formally ask that you cease and desist your line of rebuttals.

Tenboro is a very busy person, charged with the task of maintaining and upgrading a website that provides not only free access to a Role Playing Game, but also free access to a service for uploading and viewing several terabytes worth of image galleries, along with the ability to comment and rate said galleries. It is his responsibility to ensure that this website is both economically and technologically viable.

You and the other hand, are just some random person on the internet with no known institutions in his name, who is making unclear criticisms of the PONIES™ anti bot system with erroneous statements and incorrect mathematics. PONIES™ is not designed to be an infallible autonomous application, it is part of a larger anti-cheating system designed to render the efforts of autonomous playing applications, or "bots", completely moot, by imposing sanctions for incorrect responses, resulting in the inability to acquire experience, credits and other goods from winning matches and battles.

In closing,
please stop.

Signed,
~Shire "Anomtai" Geldington Esq.

@cryomorph: That's troubling - both the sprites I have created after patch and before it can save skills, and have Void. "None" seems to be bug indeed.

@cwx: Wiki is known to be misleading or plain wrong on that page. Wait until 0.77, where the actual names will be released.

@xmagus: PONIES may be solvable, but tabling images in particular from the start and even more since stretching of ponies was added is not a workable solution.

@Hohenheim: Truly?
Let's check the 0.7 series.

0.76: Low-difficulty/low-level/prof mage nerf, turn limit per second → european melee nerf, forging change → buff to new players, nerf to top-end, Monster lab food and morale → minor nerf to high-end monsters, major nerf to low-end monsters(but not unfeasible), chaos token cost increases→nerf to players, training cost readjustment → buff to all players who were already high level, possible nerf to new players, IA cost change → reverse previous, great stamina nerf/energy drink nerf(in-battle buff)/made more rarer/arena removal → credit nerf, credit drops → credit buff, droprate buff, hath perks disengaged from mod power → nerf to some, ability costs increased → nerf to players who dual-classed, leather+kevlar →light armor buff, prof changes →light armor buff, huge buffs to Dampening/Warding/Stoneskin/Deflection, minor nerf to STR/DEX/INT/WIS, major nerf to monster damage → buff to players, monster resistances lowered across the board, but made more uniform→buff to players, exponential burden/interference → buff to even heavy armor users who feather, exp buff for majority of players, Dæmon Duality tree cost nerfbuff to players, new hath perk, more chaos tokens → buff(?) to players, Ring of Blood changes → buff to players, Curse-weaving removal and major deprecating spell buff, ability boost cost nerf and more levels → buff to players, Grindfest damage scaling lowering → buff to players, AGI change → minor heavy nerf, major light and mage buff, major one-handed/dual wield buffs, drop rate buff and that's not even touching the new features such as wider quickbar and HV in general, battle inventory/innate arcana being slotted according to equipment set, HTML optimizations and other useful changes such as 1-click selfspells. And I won't even bother touching the spells themselves.

0.75: Major forge buff, cotton/leather/shortsword buff, donation, account protection.

0.74: Action Speed revamp: significant buff to equipment without AGI, buff to high-end, nerf to low-end players, heavy armor nerf, minor 2h nerf via great gleave, scroll buff, Protection (intended) buff, monster damage nerf → player buff, monster mitigation nerf → player buff, new shrining option → buff, armor prefixes → player buff, user interface adjustment such as riddlemaster and mooglemail.

0.73: Major bleed and PA nerf, minor 2h nerf, Monster AND player PMI nerf, redwood/ebony combination → buff to mid-level players via presence, nerf to high-end players, adjusted difficulty, skill buff, major Oak and Willow staves buff, major infusion buff, void buff, proficiency buff, stun buff.

0.72: Difficulty adding +playerlevel → arguable nerf, arguable buff, major Grindfest buff, credit buff, Scav cost nerf→player buff, new hath perks, major health potion buff, removal and refunding of Penny Picher, riddlemaster improvement.

0.71: New content - reforging which is major buff to players, monster lab buff, 1h buff, new hath perk.

0.70: Legendary drop rate nerf, monsters bringing more bindings → nerf?, forge exp reset and being harder(?) to grind→nerf, equipment scaling - major buff to players due no longer needing to constantly IW your equips, potencies - major buff to players via IW rewards, salvaging - forge mat availability buff, credit buff, accuracy buff, shard buff, 1h buff, DW buff, dawn exp nerf, hotkeys, mooglemail usage.

I'd say the trend is both quite positive for both players and features.

Back at you. Most of piyin's posts may not all be all that contributing and he has tendency to complain, but same goes for you, and at least piyin is yet to openly insult other users, unlike you. Or certain user who actually has gotten banned, named capzap. If you have a problem with piyin, take it to the PMs - and better hold to the wisdom that if you don't have anything good/nice to say, don't say anything at all - especially in patch notes thread. (Though Tenboro might find this constant doubting of his efforts somewhat annoying).

@piyin: That said, don't get encouragement to go off-topic from behavior above, for reasons outlined by Anomtai.
