Trusting the exit nodes of Tor is the same as trusting any proxies: Tor will make sure your connection to the exit node is anonymous, but if you also need confidentiality, then you have to make sure the connection with the final website is encrypted, as the exit nodes can see the information you exchange with the final website.
However, what you have to trust is the software that will be responsible of chaining the Tor link with other proxies, as Tor is unable to do that.
