Video Games are just a modern version of playing Pool or Darts at the bar. Just one more game-i-fied version of social interaction combined with a storytelling medium like reading books, combined with an arbitrary skill-based hobby.
Time spent on gaming is going to vary just like time spent on any of these other hobbies. When things get more busy, I divert some time away from the hobby, and when I have more time to spend gaming, I re-invest that time.
I don't see any real reason to freak out about games being "worse" than any of the other hobbies a person might have. Negatives are not unique to video games, while videogames, being a unique medium, does have some positives that no other medium can touch.
