Here poor people get the basic necessities of life from the state so they don't need to prey on each other like poor people do over there.

I don't think it is a good idea if everyone have a gun, but i don't think it is a good idea if you don't have the right to protect yourself. "except police and military and licenced hunters". Yeah it's illegal, but what about blades, boxer weapon, iron pipe and others? I will not allow to someone rob me, because every country have assholes no matter what you say, and if i protect myself, for this i'm not a bad person. But Europe have a big problem. Europe's big problem is the almost total destruction of the welfare systems of southern european countries, all in the name of "solving" the financial euro crisis. We also know these countries are also the ones that have performed the worst in dealing with the crisis.

I think the best way to deal with crime is to have a strong welfare state. Indeed also in Sweden the welfare system is slowly being destroyed, the destruction has been going on since the beginning of the 1990's. This has been coinciding with a sharp rise in prison construction, do I need to say more. In the USA there has been a similar developement though a more extreme one and at an earlier stage in history.
