Yeah the shit is by far not cheap, you have better luck just going with something other.

I just recently switched from 2H Heavy Armor to Mage, so I don't have that much advice to offer

it guess it's more effective if you forge MDB and EDB for the staff for the 1st 10 rounds, IW the staff to get either Economizer or Penetrator. (It's best in your case to get a staff like Ex or Mag Tempestuous Redwood Staff of Destruction or Willow Staff of Destruction)

I die almost every arena for the 1st few days trying X20, then I got used to it. Try to use more debuff if you have not yet. Take full advantage of Imperil, Weaken and Silence. Try to get 50 Hath to open IA1 for Spark of Life.

And also, Ex Phase usually are not too expensive, unless EDB roll is Ex Max with good INT and WIS rolls.
