I heard Gox stole 315 million $.

I think the first thing i thought way back when Bitcoin wasn't popular was how Gox is a just a scheme for the Yakuza since it's based in Japan.

I think they already blew through the money and couldn't handle the resulting bankrun when things took a turn for the worse.

There are a few pretty thorough analysis available. Its unlikely that they were planning to steal the money. They had auditors in last year and one of the top bitcoin security experts look at their backend. Basically mtgox was run using modified bitcoin code which had extreme vulnerabilities due to the way that they processed withdrawals. The latest attack probably hit them extremely hard as they relied on external validation for transactions. The latest attack worked in part by fudging the external validation process, which means other exchanges had to slow down transactions to make sure transactions passed internal validation first. Mtgox was warned last year but they probably got slammed hardcore, in a situation with low/no internal and no external validation. The same for that other shady place, they used their own funds to process returns of coins to speed up transactions but didn't have internal validation.

Currently Mtgox is on the verge of bankruptcy unless they can find someone to acquire the company and inject capital.

I might acquire them then, do they accept bitcoins?

Can we have a "apply all available BTC" button under the donation section so we don't have to have like an available balance of 1.1800000000034E-6 BTC remaining from donating or from the adopt-a-server.

Can we also have the balance match the rest of the page, ie 0.00000000 BTC format instead of the X.0000E-Y BTC format.

It could, but it would just basically eat the remaining BTC. It's not like it hurts leaving it, to add to future donations or in case the value of BTC increases to the point where it's one more buck.

(It would have to round down, since people would otherwise just repeatedly donate fifty cents worth and have it count as a dollar.)

Hmm, I didn't realize it did that when you got to four zeroes behind the decimal point. Should be rendering correctly now.

It was worth a shot with the use all button. The fix for available amount makes figuring out how many adopt-a-servers a little easier.

So seeing as I like knowing what I'm talking about, I put my two HD 6970s to work mining LiteCoins overnight, just to see what they could generate.

In 8 hours, they made about $1.60 worth of LTC at a cost of about $0.40 electricity. Also, the room was quite warm and cozy, which was nice.

Apparently one R290x could make slightly more than the two older cards I used combined, so if you have a modern gaming rig and don't pay out the nose for power, it's actually a decent alternative if you find buying BTC with fiat to be too much of a pain.

[twitter.com] A famous(-ish) economist is having a wild (and seemingly drunk) twitter rant on Bitcoin.
It's pretty funny.

It's safe as long as you play it smart. Use the established exchanges, don't get suckered into the Get Rich Quick schemes, and don't store a lot of BTC on an exchange, online wallet or internet-connected device. (You can just send directly to your EH wallet to avoid the third one.)

Thank you very much, my BTCs haven't attacked me yet. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Jokes aside, exchange sites that has "hot" Bitcoin wallets (i.e. always online) runs the risk of being hacked some day (that's the nature of being 'always online'). If you want to make 100% sure to keep your BTCs create a wallet on a computer in your home, transfer the BTCs to that wallet, and unplug the computer from the Internet (thus making it a "cold" Bitcoin wallet).

But yeah, don't ever keep all of your BTCs in one single wallet is my advice. Especially not if it's > 0.1 BTC

Also if I where you I'd just use BTCs as a mean of transfer to E-H (donation/adopt a server slot), nothing else.

1) Deposit some $$$ to your BTC exchange site of choice
2) Exchange for some BTCs
3) Send it to your E-H wallet
4) Apply donation/adopt a server slot
5) Done

To quote Coinbase:
QUOTE
Up to 97% of customer funds are stored offline.

Offline storage provides an important security measure against theft or loss.
We distribute bitcoin geographically in safe deposit boxes around the world.

Sensitive data that would normally reside on our servers is disconnected entirely from the internet.

Data is then split with redundancy, AES-256 encrypted, and copied to FIPS-140 USB drives and paper backups.

Drives and paper backups are distributed geographically in safety deposit boxes and vaults around the world.

Two-factor authentication on all Coinbase accounts

In addition to your username and password, you'll enter a code from your mobile phone, adding a extra layer of security for your account.

And this is only really matters if you're transferring over $100 of BTC at once.

BTW I do have a bitcoin wallet on coinbase

Go here: https://e-hentai.org/bitcoin.php

click on:
CODE

Your Wallet Address:

Not Created - Click To Generate

A wallet number will appear. Send bitcoins to that wallet and wait for the transaction to complete. The rest should be trivial, input in USD the value (as per rate on that same page) of bitcoins and click "Apply Donation".

Are there any exchanges that *DON'T* require you to link your bank account?
