QUOTE(xboxboy939495 @ Jun 13 2013, 03:13) You don't necessarily have to use MtGox. I didn't. As long as Dwolla uses an address (or can use an address) to make payments, you're golden. If they tell you when the payments clear on their site, that's even better (Dwolla that is). See, when I did a test donation of $1 from Coinbase (BTW, thank you whoever posted about that...I'll find you and quote you in a sec), Coinbase's transaction list showed it as Pending and said it would clear in an hour. See, the donation page E-Hentai redirects you to did NOT refresh for me. Once the payment cleared, I refreshed the page and presto, it said the payment was accepted. Now, since there has to be two ends on this transaction that sorta have to "speak" to each other (for lack of a better term) the payments on each end HAVE to match. Meaning, the amount you say you will donate MUST be the amount you send to the address. You put in your address on the Bitcoin payment page you get redirected to, and then you put in the address you're given to Dwolla (given that the site even supports this) and hence how the ends of the transaction "speak" to each other. Hope this all makes sense...I'm a little lousy at explaining things...
Nevermind, this doesn't work. It did for a one dollar donation I did, so either I screwed up with the past four attempts or so, or that was a one-time thing. Not saying you shouldn't use Coinbase. It's fairly easy to get BTC through them (albiet, time-consuming), but just reroute the bitcoins to a wallet. You might incur a few fees, but Coinbase fees are small, and so are the wallet fees (.0005 BTC ish)

...huh. One way to get bitcoins that doesn't involve setting my laptop on fire is to transfer funds from my bank account or credit card, right? Was anyone here asked to submit a PHOTO ID when going down that route?! I'd like a way to donate without plastering my face on the internet.

Use Coinbase to buy Bitcoins. They do require a bank account linking, but that's easy to do. What Coinbase does (and this is a popular thing for other services) is they deposit two amounts between one and 99 cents. You tell them what the deposits are and that confirms your bank account link. You also need to verify a cell phone (for two-step verification) to have a bank account linked. As long as you have a cell and a bank account, you're good. Also, even if you were willing to post a photo ID to MtGox (I'm assuming that was the service, yes?) they require the money to be wired, not a simple bank transfer (like Coinbase), so you'll run into some serious fees for that, even if you live in Japan (my bank's domestic wiring fee was $25, $50 for international) and can have the money wired there. Plus, Wiring itself it pretty complicated. There's a bunch of forms and stuff to fill out. Coinbase (evident of my last post) cannot donate to MtGox though (least I had trouble) so what I recommend doing now is downloading Bitcoin-Qt (Tenboro has them linked in the opening post, and he explains how to work the software...fairly straightforward). The BTC client takes a while to sync with the network (it has to record every BTC transaction that ever took place, so it takes hours) so get it downloaded now. Coinbase may be easy, but it is slow. The bank verify takes two to three business days, and a Bitcoin purchase takes five business days, so that boils down to a week and a half to two weeks. Best not to let the time lag on any more than necessary. Once you get the money at Coinbase, drain it to your wallent on Bitcoin-Qt (best to do so since they have fees for each buy and sell...small fees of a couple cents or so, but it stacks if you do a bunch of small transactions) plus, the faster you move the money, the less you risk the exchange rate dipping down and you lossing money.

Thank you very much, but I found another place. VirWoX. Problem is, I hoping the bitcoins I have now amounts to something close to $20. A fraction of a bitcoin doesn't sound like a lot. I'll do a wallet-to-wallet transfer for now. Just gotta wait for Tenboro.

For what it's worth, I just got my BTC using Bitinstant.
It's about as simple as it's probably going to get.
You don't need to fax in a photo ID or anything of the sort. You give your name, address, phone number and e-mail, print out a form, take it to Walmart (or any other Moneygram location) and process it as a simple Moneygram payment. (The website was experiencing issues for a short while earlier today though. If that happens to you, you may just need to try again later.)
All in all I had my BTC in about an hour.
EDIT: After someone suggesting I raise the issue with #MtGox on Freenode, someone went above and beyond to help me fix the issues with my MtGox account. He even paid the donation on my behalf to debug the issue and simply trusted me to pay him back. That level of support is pretty amazing. I believe the bug I was having was found and hopefully fixed as well, so ignore the rest of this post.
Now, actually donating with MtGox? That has been a tremendous pain. MtGox refuses to work for me no matter what I try.
Something seems really buggy with their payment system. I tried in both Firefox and Chrome many times. Nothing works. The form always glitches out whenever I try and submit a payment.
So I'll have to do a wallet to wallet transfer. Someone on IRC mentioned having the same issues with MtGox.

I actually tried this before finding Coinbase. I went to a local Jewel, and the way they had it set up was you had to use a special phone at the MoneyGram booth to call someone and have them put the payment through. The person I was talking with clearly did not have English as their first language and was being very vague as far as instructions went. Maybe it was just bad luck on my part, but I scrapped that idea. Also, the fees are bigger for BitInstant if I recall correctly (I wanna say 20% versus Coinbases micro-fees of a couple cents). In the end, whatever works. Seems like you had a lot easier time than I did... (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/anime_cry.gif)

Yeah. The fees are a little harsh with Bitinstant I think.
Simplicity and speed at a price. I'm used to using Moneygram, as it's the same thing I use to make cash deposits on my prepaid debit card, so it was pretty natural for me.
I think I'll bookmark Coinbase and use it for future payments though.

I finally acquired a coin.
I used coinbase, the process for linking an account is pretty simple and the whole process of purchasing the coin and transferring it to my wallet was pretty painless, but it does take 1-2 weeks start to finish. I'd give them a recommendation if you don't mind the wait.
Tenb I sent you a PM so I can make a direct donation.

When you say direction donation...how exactly are you donating? I had some issues when it came to donating through the MtGox platform...I eventually had to drain my coinbase account to a wallet and just did wallet-to-wallet.

Wallet to wallet is a direct donation. You're sending the BTC directly to another persons wallet.

Hey guys, I've got a question. I'm debating whether to use the Bitcoin-qt wallet or the multibit wallet. Does anyone know the differences between them and which one would be better to use? Thanks.

Looks like you already got it resolved, but multibit doesn't have the multi-hour first time startup while it downloads the whole BC transaction history.

bitcoin-qt is the original software, multibit is a client using the same protocol written by a different set of people. I use bitcoin-qt but apparently both clients work rather well.

Running Bitcoin-qt makes you a so-called "first-class network citizen" simply because it holds a full copy of the entire blockchain, going all the way back to when the network launched. This means you can replay every transaction that ever occurred. The drawbacks are that it requires more resources (disk/RAM), and it takes up to a day to do the initial catch-up with the chain.
Multibit is a light-weight variant, which doesn't hold this copy of the blockchain, it only keeps last few hundred blocks.

Hmm I don't think I'll need to replay every transaction that's ever occurred so I guess I'll go with Multibit. Thanks for the info!

This is fun! Like slapping nails with your bare hands! Can I use [ www.virwox.com] https://www.virwox.com/ to buy SLL (i have no idea what that is) with paypal and then transfer it into bitcoins at the same address and then something maybe is or isn't? Thanks! (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) This post has been edited by wadarkhu: Jul 9 2013, 17:47

Some good news about Coinbase! They added in a feature where you can instantly get Bitcoins...but at a cost: just like MtGox, they need a verified identity. Fortunately, I didn't see a photo ID field...but this is where it gets kinda weird...I entered in my personal info (name, address, DOB, last 4 #s of SSN) and the site said I was unable to be verified for whatever reason (gave some crap about insufficient questions?) so I don't know if it will actually work...but if it does, it'll be instant AND inexpensive!

Man, this bitcoin donation thing is wild. If only paypal weren't such dicks about content...
Anyway, I purchased my coin through coinbase, which made the process easy through bank account (though I understand if it makes people slightly uncomfortable). Anyway, I need to take my ass to sleep (chose a bad time to do research on this) so the next step would be what? Sending the coin directly from coinbase to EH, since there's a send money option on it. Or do I have to use multibit?
