QUOTE(Dark Pulse @ Apr 7 2013, 10:47) Donations are cumulative, right? Meaning if I give you roughly $20 worth in bitcoins, then later give another $30, that will count as $50 in donations, correct? Yup.

QUOTE(Dark Pulse @ Apr 7 2013, 04:47) Inching closer to that $20 donation spot, assuming the bubble doesn't burst in the next half-week or so, anyway.
Tenboro, just so I'm sure I got this right (although it'd be silly if I didn't): Donations are cumulative, right? Meaning if I give you roughly $20 worth in bitcoins, then later give another $30, that will count as $50 in donations, correct?
Also, I'm glad I bought the miner when I did. The place literally doubled their prices a few days ago. Still have to worry about the difficulty in mining once those miners go out in force, though, but I can always deal with that when I get there.
Same here, things will be interesting once BFL ships.

While I didn't plan this, I can't complain with the volatile market & how the price has spiked up in general. The bitcoin I was able to get is worth about 50% more than when I originally bought it through coinbase. Now that I've been able to get Mt.Gox to work via Dwolla (sp??) I can pick up the other goodies now. Just waiting for the end of the week....*whistles happily* Come to think of it, my bitmining is up to a little over .15BTC, which is what, enough for a bronze I think. Although ebay is offering up those BFLabs miners left & right. Heck, let's pool all our money and pick off the 1500 GH/s unit. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) We'll all be rich. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Actually I'm looking at either the 5Gh/s the 25Gh/s if I can swing it; I'm working through my overstock of Magic: the Gathering cards and seeing what's sellable. So far, one group is at about $400, and I have a couple others to look through with whom I've done business with. Maybe I'll get lucky. laters, RRViper (ya gotta spend money to make money, or at least have seed money on hand) This post has been edited by RRViper: Apr 8 2013, 22:45

The price spike in recent weeks is freaking insane, it's gone up by almost a factor of ten in two months. To be fair, I'd be more comfortable if the price was somewhat more stable, but again, it doesn't really matter for short-term transactions.

Well, the grand worry of the Bitcoin community is that all these ASIC miners will come out and the vastly increased Hash Speed will make network difficulty skyrocket. People are saying that in six months it might be twenty-five times as hard as it is today. Which means that while this is grinding along on my GPUs, if that does happen, donations will probably really fall except for people buying coins and then giving them to you through MTGox. By buying an ASIC, I'm kind of trying to beat the system. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) Of course, the flip side is that the high amount of ASICs will likely also force smaller guys out who don't have them... meaning that my life could get easier as a result. As ideally, depending on how much I make off that small one, I'll either go bigger down the road if I think I'll make my investment back, or if not, just let it run constantly in a pool and get me a steady stream of coin. All I know is that if I had it today, I'd be making coins at 225x the speed I currently am. I'd have had a gold star (if not more) in the time it took to scrape my GPU along for a bronze. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) Which reminds me, please check your PMs, Tenboro. I got about 0.12 Bitcoins (worth $22 assuming the bubble don't pop anytime soon!) via a wallet-to-wallet with your hypothetical name on them as soon as I'm given an address to send 'em to. And that's surprising? Seriously though, part of of me is expecting the bubble to pop and watch it all crash. Hopefully not till far, far, far into the future (say 50 years (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) ) laters, RRViper (even if it didn't go any higher, I'd be appreciative now. I am actually quite surprise the bitcoin prices actually went up that fast. It actually went into the amount of bitcoin I would donate, but I will have to wait till my jury duty is over before I do that (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

The sudden jump in BTC prices is insane. Now more businesses and people are starting to become aware of BitCoin's presence. I read that someone bought a new Porsche for 300 BTC when the price was around $160 USD per BTC.
Now I need to get some GPUs to mine BTC, but ASICs are already here in limited quantity and only Avalon has them out. BFL seems to be more like a scam when they changed the prices and specs on their rigs a few days ago on their website.

The catch with Avalon is they only accept in Bitcoins now. And the price for one of their rigs was about 72 BTC last I checked... Just checked again, they're all out of stock. Either way, 72 Bitcoins is, at the current prices, what we in the business like to describe as "fucktons o' da money." MTGox is, as of the moment of this post, saying 1 BTC = $235.11. This means that 72 would be $16,927.92. Yeah, sorry, I'm not that rich. Otherwise I'd be surrounded by courtesans (not hookers - those are for middle-class folk) and blow.

The 0.37 BTCs I have left over from donating a month ago weren't worth enough to bother converting into funds, so I told myself that for funsies, I'd just let them sit and that I'd cash out if they ever reached $100. They are now just a few dollars shy of that goal, but now I'm tempted to let them ride some more, which I might end up regretting. To think that had I hung onto my BTCs instead of donating right away, I'd be nearing Catgirl territory by now. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) yep.... a lonely cat housed in a soggy cardboard box down the alley. We all knew that this was a bubble the moment Greece & Cyprus stuck it's foot in Btc's. Edit: FYI if no one noticed BTC dropped 60% [ www.guardian.co.uk] today, thanks largely to DDOS and other means. This post has been edited by Blacksheep_Eldric: Apr 11 2013, 01:34

QUOTE(eramosat @ Mar 2 2013, 15:25) Looking at the bitcoin-USD exchange rate history, it appears that acquiring just 1 bitcoin today might just fund an entire gold star donation by the end of April. As long as you held onto it until then. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Although it might not do that at all... Hmmm...this could get interesting for this little community. the speculation continues. i don't think anyone has yet successfully created a bitcoin-based thread in HV, as far as I can see, so that's a bit disappointing. you'd think that with all those crazy botters out there, this would have been their wet dream...a somewhat, straightforward way to convert their HV economy abilities into real-world economy benefits based on the collective inability to acquire bitcoins. Maybe they can't get them in their jurisdiction? I've see a few offers for HV gear in exchange for renminbi but nothing at all serious. Or maybe they just want to download pictures...is there $ in that? (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) oops. I'm posting on the crash date. oh well, there's still an ok business model in place.

I'm just glad I managed to get my bronze while I could. It took like a week to scrounge up a tenth of a bitcoin because my GPU is definitely not a good one to use for Bitcoin mining.
Unfortunately, the lower the price is, the even longer it will take me to go for it unless I buy (which I'm basically trying to avoid).
Of course, if my ASIC ever got here, I'd be a lot happier, as even if prices suck, it'd be hundreds of times faster than my GPUs are. :|
