QUOTE(Sky Arc @ Apr 2 2013, 23:55) Oh man, bitcoin prices inflated around 18 bucks since I last bought it 6 hours ago (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/faint.gif) Wow, yeah, I just checked and the BTCs I have left over from my donation appreciated roughly $20 in the past 48 hours. After I donated at the beginning of March, they were worth only $11... What is behind this sudden growth? It's much like gold. It doesn't have any significant intrinsic value - you can't eat it and it's not really suitable for building anything - but since its supply is strictly limited and people want it, the value keeps increasing. At least until people don't want it anymore for whatever reason.
Incidentally, the Bitcoin "economy" is now worth about US$1.5 billion.

Why is Bitcoin rising so much, one word: Cyprus
Also Mt.Gox seems to be having problems.
Edit: Mt.Gox is working now, just a have to wait 1 hour +/- 6 hours for it to confirm.

QUOTE(sigo8 @ Apr 3 2013, 17:03) Edit: Mt.Gox is working now, just a have to wait 1 hour +/- 6 hours for it to confirm. Their website isn't being quite a reliable as I would have wished, but it works most of the time at least.. at least that's an incentive for me to move ahead with interfacing the site directly to the Bitcoin network itself instead of relying on a third party. And as far as I've been able to ascertain, Mt. Gox requires about 15 confirmations before it'll validate a transaction. Which is more than the usual 6, but it would only take on average an additional hour and a half.

In somewhat related news, InstaWallet has been hacked, is shutting down indefinitely but accepting refund claims.

While I never keep more than $1000 or so worth at Mt. Gox, that's another reason why I'd like to not rely on a third party.

QUOTE(tiap @ Apr 3 2013, 14:00) Wait until most of the buying is being done by "hardcore investors" who refuse to stay in anything with less than a 100% annual percentage yield, never minding that they never had one before the bubble started a few months ago, buying with a second mortgage against their house plus money borrowed against their bitcoin holdings, they reach the legal limits of their credit, the price consequently levels off, they start jumping out because they're no longer earning 100% APY, the price drops, forced selling occurs to meet margin calls, the price implodes, most people lose their shirts, large institutions who turned out to be buying too get bailouts at taxpayer's expense, and the price stays flat for five years because most people are scared to death of bitcoin for the time being, but willing to give junk bonds another spin.
but... no, that never happens in financial markets. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) QUOTE(Tenboro @ Apr 3 2013, 20:30) While I never keep more than $1000 or so worth at Mt. Gox, that's another reason why I'd like to not rely on a third party.
so instead they'll hack you personally, figuring that as a copyright-violating porno site, you can't get the police to do anything for you. if I was keeping $[...] in bitcoin, I wouldn't mention it. This post has been edited by mechafujoshi: Apr 3 2013, 23:50

People that where wise enough to backup (using paper and pencil) the keys of their accounts can load those into a normal bitcoin client. Then create another wallet and send the coins to it, as you never know if InstaWallet did not got a copy of the keys themselves. Unrelated: Yay! for my new cutie mark (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) it just appeared, thanks Tenboro.

(IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) You'd think we'd eventually catch on that bailing out large institutions whenever a risk blows up in their face encourages reckless risk taking (and said 100% API OR BUST! mentality). Who'da thunk? Fortunately for us, I think the RBN has a lot of softer targets to get through before hitting twilight.sparkle.is.best.pony is their best money/time ploy.

So someone figured out how to make nVidia cards have nearly triple the performance, as long as you have a Kepler-based GPU (basically the 600 series). Which is good news for me, as I do! I have a GTX 690, which is basically two 680-level GPUs on a card. This still won't let me catch up to a good AMD card, but at least between the two GPUs, I'll be getting roughly five or six times the speed I get now. The only problem is this guy is on Linux, so his patch is for that, and he has no idea how to compile windows binaries. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-By the time I get that ASIC (yep, I bought one, figured it'll go good in the long run more than just straight-up giving the donation as a one-shot thing), it's probably going to be like summer and most of the worth of a single bitcoin will have vaporized since they're like... months behind schedule. But that's the nature of the volatility of the system. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) This post has been edited by Dark Pulse: Apr 4 2013, 07:08

Fucking MultiBit, why don't you have proper fee logic, and why did you send all the dust in my wallet. It turned out to be 3626 bytes. After a few a hours I started to get scared the transaction would take forever to confirm (94 days according to my math for how long the inputs would have to age to qualify as a free transaction). So I canceled the order because I didn't think it would confirm before the order expired and the amount I sent was now down to ~$18. Anyway 10 hours after I sent it, it got it's first confirm. And the return from Gox looks like it will be in limbo for about 6 days as they didn't put a fee on it 251 minutes according to blockchain.info.
I'll try again in a few days after my nerves have cooled off. Going form theoretical to practice is always a pain in the ass.

Tried again just now manually estimating the size and calculating the fee and it got in the very next block. 2 confirms, 13 to go.
Edit: Done! Every thing but the bronze star icon is working. And unlike what Ten said earlyer it only took 6 confirms.
Edit 2: And the star is here!

Makes sense. Also you need to add a power refresh to the donation script. I found it odd that my mod power was still 22 till I remember something about power not updating till someone imbuing you with karma, so I tried cycling my red aura and boom 24 mod power.

Inching closer to that $20 donation spot, assuming the bubble doesn't burst in the next half-week or so, anyway.
Tenboro, just so I'm sure I got this right (although it'd be silly if I didn't): Donations are cumulative, right? Meaning if I give you roughly $20 worth in bitcoins, then later give another $30, that will count as $50 in donations, correct?
Also, I'm glad I bought the miner when I did. The place literally doubled their prices a few days ago. Still have to worry about the difficulty in mining once those miners go out in force, though, but I can always deal with that when I get there.
