Note that due to a technical issue with the Bitcoin network, specifically a diverging block chain caused by incompatibility between certain clients, we'll hold on for a bit on accepting transactions until it is clear which of the chains end up being the valid one. This because transactions may end up being rolled back to the last block before the divergence happened.
Edit: As far as I can tell, the incompatible chain lost the race and has been orphaned. In other words, the network responded as intended, and we're all good.

(IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) I've just lost $4 in the last few minutes, not that I care. Well, not really. It briefly dipped, but it's back up to where it was yesterday by now. Besides, if you are concerned about not losing $, you can trivially keep them in US$ until right before you want to use them. OTOH, I had a bunch of bitcoins laying around from back when they were $25-30 that I dumped a few days ago when they were $49. :3

Not really, I am not concerned about losing money with bitcoins. I have bought a few coins just to play with them and have a look inside the bitcoin network. I have never fully understood hashing (and encryption) algorithms, now I am using the oportunity to train myself (and achieve proper cypherpunk status). Thanks for you concern Tenb. Now, I am very curious about how this orphaned branch looks, first thigh I will do when I get home will be checking if my bitcoin client caught the branch as well. QUOTE I had a bunch of bitcoins laying around from back when they were $25-30 that I dumped a few days ago when they were $49. :3 To tell the truth I bought the coins a while ago. The net value of the coins is still 40% above the value I actually bough them.

Well, if you're interested, you can see the divergence [ blockchain.info] here. If you follow the now orphaned, forked chain you can see it going on for 30 blocks or so before being fully taken over by the chain that pre-0.8 clients didn't choke on. Incidentally, most if not all of the transactions were recorded in both chains, so they weren't simply lost, and it's unlikely that anyone actually lost anything.

Thanks, I'm looking at it now. I was playing with blockchain.info for a some time and yet haven't discovered most of the block tracking functionality they have. You're awesome Tenboro.

There's no law saying that you have to use MtGox at all, but it's the only one I have experience with. There are probably several smaller ones that don't require ID for bank transfers, but trustworthiness would be.. variable.

Yea I know. It's just frustrating since it's been nearly 2 weeks since I made a bank wire transfer, and I'm still waiting to transfer that money into MTGox.

Yeah, there's just a bit of front-end bureaucracy to wade through here.
I hunted for better options after looking at Mt Gox and Dwolla, but most of them were in countries I don't trust with my bank information. Sorry Mother Russia, I am not putting my account number into a site I can't read. Yet I use Kaspersky. Cognitive dissonance is fun.
Dwolla looks to be the way to go for people in the US, but knowing how well money transfer systems tend to cross borders it probably sucks for everyone outside the US (just like Payza is a horrible system for Americans since it can't take our standard credit cards). Funny thing is that one of Bitcoin's design goals was to make this whole 'send money over international borders' thing LESS of a giant pain in the ass.

Well, it is. As soon as you've obtained the Bitcoins, you can send it to anyone, and no one is able to say or do anything about it. Of course, exchanging between easily printable fiat currency and Bitcoins is the "hard" part. It's a bit funny actually, it doesn't take any verification to turn Bitcoins into state-approved money, it's the other way that gets complicated. QUOTE(BrainSucks @ Mar 12 2013, 22:25) There's a way to get bitcoins with credit card instead of bank information? Don't think any of the formal exchanges are willing to do that. Mostly because it would be very easy to defraud, credit card transactions being reversible and Bitcoin transactions being not.

Quick question on this, Tenboro. I know that standard donations can get gold-star status and stuff, but what about server slot adoption? Were server slot adoptions discontinued, and if they are not discontinued, can we use bitcoins as a medium for donating/paying for that?

Nvidia cards are seriously bad at mining alright. =/ I just did a setup for my GUIminer yesterday and left it for about 12 hours. Came back today, did a quick conversion check to see how much bitcoins it earned. Well, it was just barely getting to 0.30 USD. I think I might be wasting more money on the electricity running the process rather than earning them. All this hubbub got me to reinstall bitcoin and restore my old wallet from 2011 (I quit mining because BTC value was diving fast). Looks like I have around 6.5 BTC. Then I look at the current price and I spit out my cereal. Its over $40 now?! WTF!! Not really sure what I can buy with these BTC so I'll just donate it! Donation sent (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
