open office
open document files can actually be viewed with everything... literally everything supports them INCLUDING current versions of MS office.
And open office is dead, use [
www.libreoffice.org]
LibreOfficeOracle bought Sun and started killikng off all open source projects (like openoffice).
In addition both sun and oracle were hostile to using C code and insisted it be 100% java, as well as taking their sweet time to make changes and being in full control forever as part of the charter.
The opendocument foundation was formed to break that hold and invited oracle to join as an equal member, it refused and took the openoffice trademark with it. It then donated it to apache under condition of them never cooperating with opendocument foundation.
So open document foundation did a full fork and came up with a new name. As a result openoffice is dead and not really being developed while libreoffice is better then ever, having already replaced portions of clunky java code with C code as well as making a variety of improvements.
