You may or may not have already heard of [www.patreon.com] Patreon. Launched in 2013, this is a website that allows you to become the patron of one or more artists or content creators, by pledging either a fixed monthly amount, or an amount per released work up to a given limit per month. It has been gaining popularity lately, and is a great way to support your favorite artists and reward them for their hard work.

Crucially, unlike many other services traditionally used to send donations, Patreon does allow NSFW artists to use their service. While this will disallow PayPal as a payment option, credit cards are still an option for those who wish to support artists who create adult content.

You will find that some artists already have a Patreon link posted on their platform of choice, and more are adding it all the time. You can also search for specific artists on the site itself. And if the artist you want to support doesn't use it yet, you could always suggest that they check it out.

So if you have a few bucks to spare, and you want to support those who create the things you love, this is a great way to do it!

Give yourself a patreon account. You can send out stick figure doodles, with the "bonus rewards" being Server slots and or Gold Stars.

Tenboro doesn't create consumable media. The only thing I think he's ever drawn was a diagram for the server layout.

They even use stick figure doodles to describe how they'll take your money.

Uploaders of new works might gain more popularity by providing the Patreon link as well. But on the other hand, it's a double egded sword. People might bash you for doing this. The best would be, to be subtle. Especially, if you are the creator yourself.

Why would anyone bash them? Well, anyone sensible at least. I see nothing wrong with artists getting paid to make art.

Very cool, I although I see mostly musicians on that website. Not graphical artists.

Also, some names of professions on patreon are dodgy, e.g. what kind of art is done by a "youtuber"?

Art is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.

Seems a relatively new website.

Plus most of the random artists are western-stylish.

Let's see how it is going in following months.

Edit: ...and I see PONIES.

I've seen this used by a lot of webcomic artists, wasn't aware that it was cool with adult content creators. Very interesting.

Does anyone know if Patreon has lists of projects by category like [www.kickstarter.com] Kickstarter does? Is there a list somewhere of adult artists on Patreon? Thanks.

I've seen people put all types of shit on there. Including this one guy who wanted people to pay him to release scanlations (and he wasn't even the translator!).

Very cool website. I've been patronizing people like Smooth McGroove and Tom Merritt for months already. I wonder if they would allow scanlators to have an account. I'd be happy to support them!

While I'm not too well versed in how Patreon works, I have heard people comparing it to Kickstarter - except long term rather than in one big burst. That is very useful for people that might need that kind of support, but might be providing smaller products rather than big packages - As an example, you could think of someone making short videos of 3-5 minutes rather than an hour or two. Kickstarter would do if someone was looking to make something grand like a full motion picture (or in a similar class), but would be very inconvenient if that someone does short films instead.

In the end, the end result is the same. The people who enjoy what other people create support it. At Kickstarter you pay in one big go, at Patreon you pay it as they make things happen.

Helping art is always a wonderful thing, even if obviously art being subjective this is gonna be assaulted by not-so-artsy ppl just wanting some moneh. And, 'slow arts' as writing are obviously getting the short end of the stick, as always. Yes, I'm a writer and I'm ranting ~

This has apparently caught on with a lot of webcomic artists. I love it personally; you just pick the people you like and how much to give them, and have your total contribution deducted from your chosen payment method each month. If you get carried away and find you're giving more than you can afford, you can always go back and edit your contribution amounts. Critically, the people asking for payment on a per-creation basis still only get it once a month, and you can set a maximum monthly amount on those people if you want to keep your contributions relatively stable. As people have said, it's similar to Kickstarter in that you gain access to perks for giving more, but you're not really buying a product. It is essentially just a donation and a nice way to support something you love.

After years of artists having to try and squeeze money out of advertising or selling useless merchandise that nobody really wants, it's nice to see a new business model emerge. Some of the folks I'm patronizing are already bringing in a respectable full-time salary this way, all just for doing what they love.
