I'm kind of shocked that there's no SMT threads in this forum, given that Persona 4 being hailed by some as the "last great PS2 classic."
Personally, I prefer the main line of SMT games over Persona, with my all time favorite being Nocturne. Persona feels watered down and a lot less mature than, say, Nocturne. Plus, the main line has overall better soundtracks, though P4 Arena saw Shoji Meguro return to style.
I've only played P3P and P4G so I probably can't speak for the whole series itself, but I thought P4G was pretty much perfect. It's also one of the few games where I much prefer the English voice acting over the Japanese track. The only things that would make it better for me are seperate epilogues based on your choice of romantic partners, and the ability to skip the long-winded credits roll at the end.

Oh yeah, P4G was amazing because you could pick which skills to inherit. I remember spending 30 minutes in Nocturne for a good Jikokuten roll >_>
Sad that P4G nerfed Yosuke so hard. Oh, and long-winded credits? You ever seen Nocturne's credit roll?
I'm right at the final boss for Persona 3 FES. I don't think I'm gonna have the patience to play The Answer after I finish. Maybe I'll just watch the scenes on youtube. I recently picked up P4 Arena, but I wanted to play 3 before I got into it.
At some point I need to start playing Devil Survivor 2 again. I was having fun, but the sudden waves of money grinding for fusion experimentation just push me away.

The Answer is worth to be played at least once if you really liked The Journey. It's nice to see more of the team's background, but the (needlessly) high difficulty almost kills all the fun.

I was watching my friend die in Cocytus. Kinda sad >_>
Wasn't Yukiko the nagging girlfriend out of all of them? I guess she was the best-looking [lol Chie bob] and not a blatant skank [hi Rise] but Naoto was pretty adorable ;0
[Nocturne Maniax is the American/EU release; the Japanese had to deal with vanilla Nocturne, which kicked many a player in the dick on normal consistently]

His battle theme was epic, also I'm glad that SMT used the DMC2 model, coolest Dante eva!
I think the best battle themes were the Reason Boss Battle, Beelzebub, Lucifer, Kagutsuchi's second phase, and world map one. Dante's was kickin' but wasn't as epic as the ones I listed for my taste.
My first SMT game ever was Nocturne and, believe it or not, I thought it was a terror RPG until I fought Dante. I knew the series only by name and didn't have Internet back then, but the story of the game and the first boss OST was enough to sent a chill down my spine.
